The age old question

Overhauled the front brakes recently, replaced pads, seals and put new hoses on.

Now they squeel like mad, I mean serious squeel. I copper greased the backs of the pads when I did the overhaul, so I thought maybe I hadn't used enough, put more on. Still no difference.

Wiped all the grease off and tried again, still an insane squeel when the brakes are applied.

The pads are direct replacement for the ones that were fitted before the overhaul so why are the squeeling like pig in hot tar?

I'm sure its the pads squeeling against the discs now put cant seem to get it to stop.

Any ideas?

Did you put the anti squeel shims back in? , my NTV had those and they used to squeel when I lost them doing a road side repair.

Either that or ride and try to bed the pads in maybe?.

My CBR600 Squealed at the MOT test after only doing 12 miles the MOT tester didn't like it , I took it on a couple laps of the M60 and they squeel no more.

Is your rotor clean, no grime or anything on it ?

As said you may just need to wear them in.

Hi, as suggested check your shims, make sure they're not bent.
Your new pads will need a few hundred miles of regular braking to bed in properly. And they may be very slightly larger than your old set (the pads.. not the pad plate) if they are then this could be the cause.
1 last thing...if you've fitted new pads and then gone hooning, it can cause glazing which also makes squeals.
The copper grease is for ease of future removals, not to stop squeals.

Hmmm...i always thought the anti squeal shim did that.
But i'm sure more info will persuade me 1 way or t'other.

Whats that then? Dont think the ZZR1200 has those, retaining pin holding the pads in, spring cover and pads backing straight onto the pistons.

In fact all the bikes I've owned have been like that. Or am I missing something.

Anyway, the squeal is still there, annoying the hell out of me. I'll stick with it for now and see if the pads break in, but they've already covered 200miles +.

hmmm, definatly none of those on any of the bikes I've owned, the parts diagram doesn't show them either.

Are they standard on some bikes or an addition for all?

Put some copper slip round edges of pads and all down the pin aswell and plenty on the back, rough the pads up again slightly and just make sure disc etc is clean, take it for good run (by good I mean distance not speed, take it easy on fresh pads as they'll just glaze) see how it is then, always solved 99% of my problems lol

No anti-squeal shims on mine, just the anti-rattle clips.

I always thought the copper grease stopped the piston and pad rattling at different rates and causing the squeal? Like giving a contact layer or summit?

Are the discs perfortated?
If so drill out the holes to remove the built up brake pad residue.
That cures squeaks.
Anti squeal shims interfere with resonance between pad backing and piston. Which prevents/dampens the vibrations from braking being amplified by the caliper/wheel.
Copper Slip adds to the dampening.

It could be that your disks are warped and need replacing of skimmed. when you brake does the leaver feel like it's pumping of throbbing?
