RS Speedo trouble

Well, the previous owner said it had a working speedo, i take it for a test ride and theres not even a twitch from the needle,

The cable is not snapped, and a mate has looked and says where it goes into the drive looks fine?

Is there a common problem that goes wrong with these?
is there a way i can eliminate the problem someone said running a drill on it or something?

Speedo drives failing are a common problem on RS's.

Costs about £40 for a new one.
