There was a big fire here in Oldham yesterday. An old cotton mill housing the kitchens company owned by the infamous Vance Miller.
If you've not heard of him then his websites are an interesting read.

Anyway, back to the fire. A diesel generator apparently exploded, then caused several gas canistors to blow and the result was a very big fire. I can still see the smoke from my house now and i'm about 3 miles away. A few pics have been posted on the net, and a video.

Thinking Not sure about the Police having more time on their hands....quote from the news report...

Word on the street from a exellent source is Vance Miller will come up smelling roses and is going to sell the land for a housing development on the site. Hope the Chronicle follows this story up. Watch this space!

....just a very good thing no-one was actually hurt or killed Shocked

Exactly what my mum said.

I had an amazing view of it from my house, saw one of the gas cylinders explode and shoot a fire ball into the air, then later on saw parts of the roof collapse twice.

So much better than watching the telly.

Here's a picture my sister took when it was just smoking.

There's a story on Millers website about him being told by a contractor that Oldham council had been given £58million to redevelop the area and where the mill stood was earmarked for offices. The plan was to cpo all the building belonging to small firms around there, but the cost of shifting Miller would be too much so a smear campaign would be used against him to close him down.

Not my pics. I only heard about the fire at about 10pm last night. I looked out of the back bedroom window and saw a huge plume of smoke illuminated by the flames.

Old news that the Council were given £58million by central Government to develop the area and prepared plans for the Mill without consulting the owner Mr Miller. The council would be happy for the mill to burn down as then they can then put a CPO on it for much less outlay than they could with an operating business in it.

So it burns down he gets an insurance payout and the building and land taken from him for virtually nothing via a CPO that's hard to fight with nowhere big enough in the area to re-locate to and no need for his overseas business's. Would not be a bright move.

Pah, call that a fire?
Try this one for size:

Awaits an Aussie BCFer to post pics of the recent bushfires in similar 'oneupmanship' style......

Its big for a little town like Oldham.
Funny thing is we seem to be a bit prone to Mill fires.
And oddly enough there always seems to be some development or other waiting in the wings.

I wasn't suggesting that he had done it, just that it seemed too convenient to be accidental and that the Police would have some serious investigations on their hands to find out who was responsible.

She's heavily involved with Oldham Carnival, Hollinwood Festival etc etc, She posted the video today so wondered if that's where you had seen it, being both Oldhamers I wondered it was a possibility.

The explosion and resulting fire was rather big for a small town like Hemel too!
I've done quite a bit of work in some of the various mills around Oldham (Raven etc), TBH my estimation of Oldham is that it would be improved if it were to be entirely destroyed by fire and then concreted over.
(BTW, the same goes for Hemel too!)

Sounds fair enough to me. Hopefully the towns inhabitants (minus me of course) would have to perish in said fire. Very Happy
