A buddy of mine down the street is rebuilding a wrecked bike. It is 2002, I will post make and model in a few hours. Just wanted to try and figure out what you guys thought the most likely problem was.

The bike was wrecked in the front no damage on the sides just the shifter is broken. These are apparent problems.

1. When you get the bike in neutral the starter will not try and start the bike. If you pull the clutch while in neutral and hit the start the starter will try but will not even get the engine turned over halfway.

2. When in neutral the bike will roll freely.

3. If you put the bike in any gear 1,2,3,4,5,6 let the clutch out and try to force roll the bike foward to turn the engine the wheel will turn about as far as the starter will turn the engine, less than a quarter turn. After working it foward and backwards we can sometimes get it to turn over all the way then lock down.

So we know that the engine is probably locking up but what is confusing is why is the bike only trying to start with the clutch pulled in. I am not familiar with very many bikes but the ones i have ridden would start when they were just in neutral. (let me know if some are different) If the engine was locked up (he thinks it is unlikely because the bike has less than 1000 miles on it) and we think the transmission is messed up because of the starting issue it just would seem unlikely that both the tranny and engine were screwed in this wreck. (but this could be the case)

Also there is no visible frame damage. What I am unsure of is exactly how the safety senor works. I would assume that if the bike wasn't in neutral the sensor would stop the starter from firing. I am finding it highly unlikely that it affects the engine directly.(but here again I am still learning and please correct me if i'm wrong, it just sounds logical)

if anyone can send us in the right direction or offer some advice on some of the things I am unsure I would really appreciate it.

Thanks Guys

Chris

Erm Triumphs and Suzukis won't start without the clutch being pulled in even in neutral....
Don't worry at all about the bike not wanting to start unless the clutch is pulled, it sounds normal.

If the engine won't turn over then you might have some major engine damage. Perhaps a dropped valve or something equally nasty.

More info on the bike might help a bit too! Smile

Hi

As MarJay says, Suzukis will not start unless the clutch is pulled, and plenty of other bikes will lock the starter motor out when you are in gear unless the clutch is pulled.

The problem with it turning over could easily be a hydraulic lock. Take the plugs out and then try to turn the engine over (but with the ignition off just in case it is full of petrol which might otherwise spray out and ignite). If the bike has been stood for a while then it is quite likely that the carbs up gunged up, so when the petrol is turned on when you have tried to start it, the fuel has just run straight though the carbs into the inlets.

All the best

Keith

thanks for the info on the suzuki's. It is a suzuki sv650s. After reading that there was probably nothing wrong with the tranny we put it in 6th and tried a bit hard and go it to turn over. Then it started right up. It threw out massive smoke so I am assuming that it has sat around awhile, so we will clean the carbs and see how it runs after that. Thanks for you guys help.
