Driving a car with 1 tail light missing

Is it illegal? I have read the road traffic act and am not clarifying the law here.


Can someone informed, maybe a police officer, tell me if I can drive my car during the DAY without the drivers side tail light providing I use hand signals to turn right?

The front and side repeaters still work, and the other side is fine.

I have a central brake light in the rear screen, and a reverse light on both sides, so I would still display a white for reversing.

The damaged light has been fully removed and its recess covered, there are no protrusions from the car.




Any help is appreciated, I must use this car to drive to work daily, I have ordered a new fitting which should be delivered in the next couple of days.


I want to avoid paying for an MOT centre to stamp for work that can be done at home in minutes with a spanner.



Ultimately, will an officer of the law penetrate me for this?

I'd advise just being careful, and apologetic if the rozzers pull you for it. At least you've got a part on order which is more than can be said for the ignorant pricks who drive day-in-day-out with a brakelight or headlight not working.

Two tail lights are required so you could probably be done under construction and use rules.

You might have a defence with the bit on (c) a defective lamp, reflector, dim-dip device or headlamp levelling device on a vehicle in use on a road between sunrise and sunset, if any such lamp, reflector or device became defective during the journey which is in progress or if arrangements have been made to remedy the defect with all reasonable expedition; or, but having it taped up pretty much shows that it didn't happen on the journey.

I got pulled with a headlight not working, and had this shit, where i had to get a new bulb and take it to a MOT station to get a stamp to prove i done it, then take it to the police station, waited there for 20 mins. kwik fit wanted 30 quid for the stamp!! took another garage,took 1 min to do it, but still wanted 10 quid the cunts, and that was cheapest i found.

I didnt even know the bulb had blown, yet the pig had to be a jobsworth cunt.
