Improvement is it'll be 2ft shorter than standard, 1ft cut off the chassis and the pickup tub takes up another foot. Bobtailing it and making a tray back to put on.

Improvement should be obvious, it'll be able to get to more places and so able to tow out more stuck range rovers. Razz

And my plate? That's easy. Mr. Green

Your plate does say what I think it says?

I've not normally got time for private plates but that's pretty cool!

hmmm

my first thought was this is nuts, then i realised that you can put your pickup tub back on so it cosmetically looks no different

I don't quite understand your description of the surgery, but I can help thinking that the bits you cut off were there for a good reason.

The longer the vehicle, the more likely you are to ground out. It also governs how step an incline you can take.

For proper off-roading, generally, the shorter the vehicle is the better. It's one reason the SJs are so capable when kitted up.

Their main purpose was supporting the tub, but as I'm not using the tub anymore the cut off bits of chassis have no purpose.

Putting the tub back on would mean it isn't any shorter so cutting the chassis would have no benefit, with the tub off and the chassis cut it's about 2ft shorter. Mr. Green

Shorter is better. Smile

Why can't you just cut the standard tub as in the pic I provided?

Or do you have plans for an outer roll cage too?

oh and.........

Do they weigh enough to get the grip to do that? at 2 1/2 tonne Land/range rovers aren't the lightest of vehicles Laughing

I can see the point of cars over motorbikes for some uses on roads, but offroad fun has to be motorbikes for me.

Can just cut the standard tub but it's shorter without the tub. Smile

I do have vague plans for a roll cage but I don't think that'll happen for a few years.

Yeah they're able to pull land/range rovers with no problems. Pull them out, and then drive straight through whatever they'd got stuck in. Razz

I've seen Ste's truck pull a range rover out of a bog it got stuck in. To be fair to the range rover it did eat its cam belt so was never going to get out alive anyway!

Okay, a quick look through some pictures...

1. Range Rover fails at fording at needs towing out by L200.

2. Range Rover fails at muddy uphill and starts over heating.

3. Range Rover fails.

4. Range Rover fails at driving along a draining stream thing so tries to drive out but fails at that as well and needs towing out.

In those pics the range rover has mud tyres and other stuff which should make it better, the L200 is standard. L200 kicks arse. Razz

It's an '06 K74 Trojan

What year and model is your works one? I believe 2.0l ones are imports.

There are batches of L200's with dodgy head gaskets (mostly '03 or '53 plate trucks), once the head gasket is replaced then there should be no further problems. So if it's being replaced and blows again then there's something else which needs to be fixed. EGR or the thermostat are usually the main culprits.

So lets get this right....

You've taken off the tub and cut two foot out of the chassis which considering how high up it is isn't really going to affect your departure angle much at all. In fact it probably won't affect anything except lose a bit of weight as the rear axle is still in the same place.

As to the Range Rover pictures it's a bit of an unfair comparison really. That Range Rover looks pretty much standard except for running Discovery steel wheels with 205R16 Satanik tyres and the driver hasn't even thought hmm, I'll be running low pressures, maybe I should fit some inner tubes. Doh!
Compare that to your L200 which has some rather expensive mud tyres on it, snorkel for wading which the old Rangie doesn't have and possibly a shackle lift kit as well and it's hardly surprising that yours is better of road. Wonder what the price difference is between an old Rangie and a 3 year old L200?

How about compare like with like except you can't easily do that as your L200 has leaf springs not coils so lets say a LWB defender or whatever they call them now that does have coils will always be at an advantage assuming the same tyres are used.

Cut 1ft off the chassis, the end of the tub is 1ft further back than that so by taking the tub off it losses 2ft in total. It will affect the departure angle, as when offroading the rear bumper was scrapping frequently.

As said, in those range rover pics my L200 is completely standard, it didn't have the snorkel, MT tyres, or any of the other bits and pieces. It was later than I starting changing parts on it. Price different, yes, quite a bit.

Compare like with like, hmmmm. Wink Unless comparing with challenge vehicles, then the L200 is very capable off road. Mr. Green You have land rovers (I think, might be wrong lol), come along offroading sometime after February next year when I've got my license back. Cool
