Thought I'd call on the combined brain power of BCF.

Noticed a split in the BROS tyre earlier, enclosed is a photo of it.

Just wondering if it's dangerous / normal / life threatning / shit never ride that bike again / etc?

Thanks. Very Happy

Well I don't know much about bike tyres to be honest but I used to fit car tyres for a few years, how deep is the split?,put a screwdriver or something similar into the split and if you can see or feel the cords or wires then don't use it,other than that take it to a specialist bike tyre dealer and ask for their opinion, most are bikers themselves so they won't rip you off unlike places like Kwik Fit etc who generally aint got a clue about bike stuff anyway.

The best advice really is if you're in any doubt then replace it...better that than risk a blowout at 70mph Wink

Hmm, not really sure about that one... it looks small. But how old is your tyre? It must be hard to be cracking up like that surely? And if it's hard then road stickability isn't going to be great....

No idea how old the tyre is, it was on it when I bought the bike. The tyre is not rock hard though, it feels normal.

Home made splitdipometer(tm) reads 2mm, I didn't want to start fishing around seeing if I could feel the cords or anything and I don't want to make it any bigger.

I refuse to replace the back tyre, there's loads of tread left and they cost a bomb. Razz If push comes to shove I'll put an inner tube in.

Well if you pop down to a tyre refitter for advice they're always going to tell you to change it. Personally I don't think I'd worry too much about it as long as the tyre feels soft enough and has good tread.

Sounds like you've already made up your mind though... Exclamation

Yeah I have to an extent, I just wanted to make sure that it wasn't going to pop in the next few miles.

Thanks for the input. Thumbs Up

If it was me I'd get it looked at. I've generally found riding with dodgy/worn tyres is a false economy especially if you crash because of it.

I'd definitely seek an experts opinion however any tyre dealer worth their salt is going to tell you to change it as if they don't and you have an accident caused by the adverse wear there's the possibility of them becoming liable for administering negligent advice.

I read somewhere that the problem with splits is that there is a possibility of them growing once the tyre reaches its' optimum heat as the area around it gets supple and in contact with the roads surface.

Rear Bridgestone BT45 @ 74.99

Thumbs Up

needs doing regardless mate, as you have no idea how long those tyres have been on there, a new pair really sorted a lot of the handling "issues" with mine

Mmm.

If I was going to replace the rear I'd replace the front too, as the BT45 is completly different to the radial ones on there at the moment, plus the front tyre is on extra time anyway, it already has a tube in because of a puncture that couldn't be plugged.

A front and rear BT45 for my bike off wemoto is £244.97, something I can't afford at the moment.

Meh I think I'll monitor the tyre and make sure it doesn't get any worse, as I can't afford new tyres just now, plus there's loads of tread left on the current ones.

You should be able to get them cheaper than that, you can get a pair of 090's for £165 ride-in ride-out around here.

Hi

A radial front tyre is illegal with a cross ply rear tyre (the BT45 is a cross ply).

Personally I would probably keep going with a small split like that in the tyre but keep an eye on it. However that is me, and the decision is up to you.

All the best

Keith

I was going to say that. Laughing

I wouldn't worry about it personally, if I was overly bothered I would put a dab of glue in there to shut it back up. Laughing

If the split/tear /whatever it is was in the groves of the tread I would of been worried, but its in the thickest part of the tyre and as such wouldn't let it bother me.

My tyres have always have cuts like - I have a gravel drive, when you spin a wheel up on it it eats your tyres. Don't worry about it, if the tyres isn't down to the canvas its perfectly servicable.

And on the CB250 I got 250 miles out of the canvas too.
