Hi all, went to the bank today to get some coin for my new bike,it said insufficient funds,im like what?!!?
anyway i go to see the staff in the bank to ask them what the hells going on.
turns out last night when i withdrew money from the cash machine on my high street someone had fitted something or other on to the cash machine and it swiped my card and pin number!

B*STARDS!!!

they took 300 quid out over in blackpool about 60 miles way at midnight last night.

BE WARNED all!

luckily the bank phoned the fraud department for me and i should get the money back and they also gave me a free overdraught so i could still buy my bike Smile

They normally wait close by whilst they are waiting for some unsuspecting sod to withdraw their hard earned cash, so if you see some thing strange glued to the machine either get it off then jump on it or if you spot them take it to them and insert it in their slot followed by a boot Evil or Very Mad

Here's some info about it:

Quote:
Two devices. The camera housing mounted at the top of the ATM overlooking the keypad. The card-reader device is mounted over the ATM card-reader slot. Both devices are custom fitted to a particular type of ATM machine, even the colours match...

Both devices are independant: no wires, no wireless, no telepathy, the devices don't talk to each other.

The camera records 512mb worth of video, and the card-reader (an MSR500M) records the card details.

Both the camera and card-reader store timestamps so that keypad footage and card details can be matched up.

Hi

Apparently not that uncommon, and most likely at unattended cashpoint machines. Less likely at a machine outside an actual bank.

However there have been far simpler scams. Like the time someone put an out of order sign over a deposit slot and then had a security guard stand there to collect the deposits Laughing . People did fall for it.

All the best

Keith

There was something on telly about this last night!
Apparently they use a swipe thingy (can't remember the name) on the door which looks exactly like the original and have a little cctv camera on the cashpoint to get your pin number, then they create there own card and together with your pin= CASH!!!

Bastards huh!

I saw a show where they did an experiment, and did just that, of course as soon as the money was handed over it was returned, but it was funny, and it had a load of other scams and the like on, makes interesting watching, can't remember exactly what it was though.

The easy way to card fraud!

1) Goto https://www.interesting-devices.com/asp/default.asp?C=1
2) Order Programmable card reader/writer
3) Order Blanks times X amount
4) Steal credit card information X way
5) Program card with dodgy information
6) Cut out strip and glue over your own card
7) Find a stupid assistant that cant see
8) Exit with lots of goodies!

Thats how you do it if your stupid enough to find someone to take it.

Please note I am in no way involved in any type of card dodgyness Having worked in retail and scouring the net I have found this is on of the methods used!!

I've heard you shouldn't take the devices off the ATM's if you see them because someone who put it there may be watching and might like it back.

Very boring but you should ring your bank or the local police to inform them of it so they can do something. I think I heard that.

The "new chip and pin" in some stores now are targets as you have to enter your PIN in view of everyone! Of course 99% of people will cover it up when using but if you're unlucky, or stupid, a quick mugging followed by a large cash withdrawl, kerching to the crooks.

I watch my cards with my life, my MBNA credit card has a £12k limit and no maximum daily withdrawl limit Shocked

There have also been instances of people standing outside branch doing market research , "sir please withdraw x pounds from your account and give it to me on the way out and tell me about the service, the money will be put back in your account. Do not tell anyone inside as we want to know how good they really are"!

They got a fair bit before someone grassed them up.

You should also be suspicious of free standing ATM's there a a few real ones but not so many now as fake ones we being put in shopping centers etc.

However most credit card fraud is the result of handing your card over in a resturant and letting them take it away.

Regards

Charlotte

One I saw on the Beeb was where:

o Geezer nicks something from a shop, e.g. clothes, dvds, etc
o Maybe buys something cheap to get an example of the receipt info, e.g. positioning, lettering, incrementing numbers
o Goes home, has his own little thermal printer and blank receipt rolls with various major retailer names on
o Makes fake receipt
o Returns to shop and asks for refund with said receipt
o Profit

This is useful because:

o Thief gets full price back in cash
o Flogging dodgy goods would normally need discounting
o It's not very suspicious (lots of people return clothes, etc)

Oh yeah a chip & pin tip I heard:

The chip & pin thing is for your credit card, which you normally buy stuff with and have it put on credit. But you can also get cash out of the till with your credit card, but most people don't know their PIN number for this.

The banks are promoting it partly because once people get to know their credit card PIN, they're more likely to withdraw cash with it. The kicker is that the interest on cash withdrawals can be loads (e.g 4x) more than what you normally have on purchases.

The chip & pin scheme is for both credit and debit cards and is for increased security as shops don't bother to check signatures.

This is true if you use a credit card but there is no charge for debit cards (solo switch delta etc). Most shops don't allow cash back against a credit card but some can.

The large shops promote it as it costs them a lot of money to bank cash and they are charged per 100 pounds so it is much better for them to get rid of it using cash back.

More fool you then!!

what circumstances are there where you require taking out that much money?

For any sizeable amount of cash, I refuse to go to the atm. I go inside personally and not alone either.

It can happen to anyone, completely random, nobody in particular is targeted. Thats just pointless having that capability on a card.

Sorry to hear Marc!

hope its sorted soon
