I have an Astronomy exam tomorrow and while going over my notes i've been wondering how they find black holes.
one method is in binary systems the dead star that has turned into a black holes begins to suck material away from its partner star. AS this material get sucked in it emits x-rays. how? didn't think that nothing could escape black holes as the escape velocity is greater than the speed of light, and X-rays travel at the speed of light?

not sure if this is in the right forum but it is geeky
