Does anyone have experience of insuring a modified bike through Carole Nash?

Getting quotes for my bike without mods CN come back at less than half the price of Bennets and eBike, and adding another bike i'm thinking of on the multibike part only adds £50 to the premium.

Mods i'm looking to declare would be:

- replaced front forks to newer model
- replaced rear wheel (wider profile)
- braced swingarm
- front brakes uprated to newer model
- exhaust replaced with 4-1 (no power gain)

just wondering if anyone has declared mods to CN and what their response was?

Wouldn't even bother mentioning any of those personally.

Thumbs Up

Very Happy personally neither would I

trouble with that is i'm a newbie biker and therefore fairly likely to run out of talent at some point in the next couple of years.. just don't want to give an insurer a way to dodge a claim should I be unfortunate.

Unless you ran over an entire school of children, then mounted the kerb and mowed down a few hapless pensioners I wouldn't think anyything you listed would give a major reason to go against you in any kind of claim.

Just me personally mind, Thumbs Up.

I think the only mod that I would be really bothered about declaring would be a different sized engine. However, having considered doing this to one for my bikes, and having gotten a quote, I decided not to.

Insurance renewal: £180
Insurance for mod: £5220

It was only a 125 with a 200 engine in there, but they went mentalist at the idea.

I declared all my mods to CN (Power-Commander, Akra pipe etc), made no difference to the premium.

I tend to make sure I mention mods to the bike, panniers, fairing, topbox, exhaust, etc. This is just to make sure that if the worst does happen I can claim for it all without them saying they didn't know and it's not part of a 'standard' bike.

I also state none of the mods are performance modifications (because they're not). IMO that's what they're looking for in case of payouts.

FWIW I don't trust insurance companies.

Thumbs Up

I've just this month changed my insurance to Carole Nash as they were able to find me cover for 'accessories' which was basically my after market exhaust and fairings. I was insured through Adrian Flux previously and whilst they continued my cover they would only replace standard kit, no different stuff. I figure that Sod's Law means if I drop the bike or have an accident it's bound to damage the exhaust and I wanted it to be covered. Cost me about £50 more but the exhaust was £700 so I thought it worth while. They didn't consider my changes to be mods, just accessories and I was given the choice of £1k or £1.5k.

Thing is it's a 2 bike policy but when I got my XLR200 they couldn't include that as it's a grey import and the company that accepts accessories doesn't accept imports Rolling Eyes Ended up getting a cheap online insurance for it separately.

Yea my insurance company said they would only replace standard parts when I declared all my mods (non of them performance), think I will need to change them on my next renewal as I'd be a bit out of pocket if I didn't get back costs of the lower fairing, autocom, topbox, gel seat, hugger etc.

I told CN about my cans and something else and they said if it wasn't performance enhancing they weren't bothered. Smile

That's what they told me too. I declared a long list of mods on the hornet and the premium didn't change.

The premium will only change if you take out (I can't remember the term they used) for example "modified bike" insurance. The difference in premium for me was nearly double so I didn't bother.

Absolutely. That's what I was told, but that they would not replace them in the event of an accident, I would only be eligible for the standard replacements. As I wanted my Yoshi can I felt that I should make sure it was covered for replacement, that's all.

I've had non standard parts replaced in the past by them. Maybe it depends on wether or not it's a non fault accident?

If it's a non-fault they wouldn't be replacing them anyway the 3rd parties insurer would.

I'm with Carole Nash and they also told me they pretty much don't care regarding accessories providing they don't enhance performance. Declared them all anyway because i wanted it recorded in the call.
