Hey all,

My bike has MOT, has Insurance, but because it's not showing on the MID, I can't buy tax for it. I have every intention of buying tax, just impossible to do so. It's been insured since Wednesday, but not been able to ride it due to the lack of tax. Sad

I really want to go for a ride, and trying to weigh up the consequences. Do you think the police would tow my bike away as it's not showing on the insurance database? What do you think the police would likely do, do you think they'd be understanding? Do you think they'd even care about the lack of tax?

Surely you can tax it at the post office with an insurance certificate? Confused

V5 is at my parents address, filed away safely, and I have the key for the file up here. Laughing Doh!

Never used the post office since the online service has been active.

If you got a nice copper, he might ring your ins co. So long as you have the cert with you.

If not its a expensive trip to get your bike back from the pound after you have collected all the paperwork....

You don't need a V5 to tax at post office, so long as you have the form for renewall, Ins cert and MOT. Thumbs Up

If it's sorned, I'm pretty sure that if you were unlucky enough to get pulled over, they'd take the bike off the road as it shouldn't be on it....

Buying tax is a pain in the arse. I don't understand why the bike must be insured/mot'd to buy tax. Why can't they keep all three separate.

Because tax is there virtually as payment to use public highways.

You shouldn't use public highways without insurance or an MOT, so you need those first.

Tax it over the phone and tell them you've just bought insurance so its not on the database yet.

To try to keep the number of un-insured and un mot'd on the roadas low as possible.

Seems to me you're missing the key point of the problem - it's not in the database.

It should be on the database now as Insurers have 5 days to get the details on there. If they haven't, then get onto them and find out why they haven't, because inevitably it will be an absolutely PITA when you do get pulled and they want you to prove your insurance details to them on the roadside because their database is infallable Rolling Eyes

If I'm going to drive on the road with no insurance, then I probably wouldn't care about tax. Laughing

And since I bought insurance on Wednesday, and as of today, it's still not on. I spoke to the brokers, who have been chasing it up for me every day (as I've been hassling them every day) and they've been assured by the insurance company, that the change was accepted on Thursday, in this case, I will blame the database.

It takes two working days to update, so it should be on when I wake up tomorrow. Rolling Eyes

Yes, but you're much easier to spot as an uninsured driver when you don't have a valid tax disc

I disagree with that, purely because I've never yet had a tax disc on any of the bikes I've owned, and never once have I been pulled for it, or questioned on it (6 years of riding, to give some idea of scope).

Phone your insurer and ask them to send another copy of the policy cert to you, or fax it, or email it.

then get ur ass down the post office to get a new shiny tax disc.

Swinton took 2 weex to send me my cert, but i needed it sooner for the same reason as you. They let me go into a branch where they got a copy printed off there and then.

sorted.

stop being a fanny

My insurance broker is 600 miles away or so. Not too easy to just nip down there. Cover note arrived today anyway, so I can get my ass down the post office. Sods law says it goes on the MID tomorrow. Laughing

And it's a tempory additional vehicle, so there's no certificate issued.

P.s, what's wrong with being a fanny? Crying or Very sad

Try to widen the spectrum of thought a little - there's more on the roads than bikes Wink

Whilst bikes might not have the most visible positioning of a tax disc, cars do - it's right up front in the windscreen. No tax disc = easy to see, worth a tug and see what else comes of it.

However, if the car is taxed - Mr Copper sees an ordinary every day car with a tax disc in window and doesn't bat an eyelid.

Gerrit now?

A cop would have to be a complete arse to get your insured and MOT'd vehicle towed - dunno if they have that power or if it's down to the DVLA, anyway?

iooi wrote:

Don't see what that has to do with tax at all - as they can check for those separately; also, you can have a single day's insurance with MOT about to expire the next day and still get a tax disc that will make your vehicle appear pretty legitimate for a year's use.

Oh and I've often driven with no or out of date tax discs showing on vehicles that are taxed (including when ANPR was used less) and never had a big problem with that either.
However, yes, not showing the tax disc does meant that I WILL HAVE run over several kittens every drive, despite it being sat on my desk at home.

Correct, but it's still a very prominent visual alert to the Police that something's up with either you, the vehicle, or both.

A mid 90's mondeo in reasonable nick driven by a middle aged bloke in rush hour traffic may well be uninsured, but unless the police car is equipped with ANPR, which not all are, then it's not going to get anyone's eyelids batted at it. With no valid tax disc, it's immediately clear that something's up. It's not rocket science to see why it's still a requirement to have evidence of insurance and MOT when buying tax.

Oh yes they can and have done so many times, just do a net search......
If its not showing on the d/b and he does not want to ring your ins co, then they can take it off the road...

If the ins and mot do not cover the period the tax runs from, then it should not be issued.
So if you tried to tax your bike on the 20th May and the tax was running from June, your ins and mot would have to cover a period in June....

Hi

Off topic, but VED these days is a complete waste of time. Just an expensive way of collecting some revenue and keeping some people employed in Swansea.

Tax disk itself is hardly difficult to fake, so that still relies on a database check. So hardly worthwhile to save on a database check for MOT and insurance (both of which could have only been in date for 1 day when the last years tax disk wash bought).

As to doing it online, you need the V5 anyway for the reference numbers.

All the best

Keith

Police also beat people up, threaten to do people for crimes that don't exist and generally show a lack of knowledge of the law they are implementing. So just because that's what they do, doesn't mean they're allowed to Smile.

I don't believe the databases has any legal standing, whatever some would claim. Haven't seen any evidence to suggest that it does have a legal standing... bit like restriction certificates.

Your tax and MOT only have to cover the day it starts. It's rare that I've got tax before the previous one finishes and I've always had enough MOT etc when I have.
However, in the past I have got Tax on the day the MOT finishes (to save hassle) - I could have then been on the road unMOT'd for a year and unlikely to have been detected.

Well, went out on the bike to the Post Office, bought a tax disc and went for a ride. Pulled over no less than three times in 150 miles. First two it was ANPR camera in the car that triggered it, third was "I attracted their attention" and their checks came back with no insurance.

Either way, my cover note is valid until 1920 tonight, and the tax disc I have expires 30th June 2010. My bike will be taxed tomorrow, but not insured. As of now, according to the police that tugged me, technically, I'm not taxed today. Laughing

I've got the V5 numbers written on a spreadsheet on my PC, along with all the other details. As you're probably more than well aware, keeping up with Tax/SORN MOT and insurance for 6 vehicles is nothing short of chaotic.
