Not having any mirrors on the road really does my head in - I'm one of those 'like to know absolutely everything around me' people and when you take that away I'm not happy at all.
Broke the mirror off my CBR last year and it not being there annoyed me enough that I paid Honda price for a new one just so I could get it there and then, rather than wait for one mail order. That would be £45 |

I thought you needed at least 1 mirror on the bike. Probably wrong though going by what everyone else says. ____________________ Honda NSR125R -> Suzuki GSXR400R GK76a -> Kawasaki ZX636 B1H -> Honda CBR400RR NC29 -> Nothing |

my mirror on my knewly brought goose fell of in the middle of a 70 mph overtake and got squished by a truck. So took the stem off and only have one. But its driving me nuts as i think i should replace em, but i dont overly tend to use them as im generally the fastest member of traffic anyway and when filtering they are the widest point on the bike.... the bike (and me) are about a foot and half wide at widest points (with knees clamping tank), but then the mirrors make it like 2 and a half. Means im concentrating on not clipping them far too much. I miss sportsbike mirrors... about an inch wider then the fairing, and you dont need spanners to adjust them.
who thinks i should take the other one off, and who thinks i should put another one on? Or just leave it as it is (its the left mirror that fell off, and the right one is the one thats used most anyway so might just leave as it is) ____________________ China traffic/travel bike vid - When I make a sweeping statement, please add the word 'statistically' in to the sentence before you bitch...

You still carry out lifesavers, mirrors or not.
bonny_ricardo wrote: | And having stupid wide points sticking out does tend to make it a tad harder to filter fast. |
So don't filter fast?
It really is quite simple. |
Point one - Obvioiusly you still lifesaver, but you dont want to have to to get an idea of traffic behind you.
Point two - Even if filtering at 30 odd, worrying about avoiding wingmirrors hitting cars distracts you from the skoda in front weaving into the centre line.
And dont say well dont filter then, cos then i will think your being a burk. What is the point in owning a bike if you dont accelerate well, overtake people who annoy you, make nova driving ped boi's look like slow idiots when they try and take you from the lights and never get caught in traffic (altho i am not a suicidal nutcase with no patience, unless its about 6 cars deep i dont bother filtering, and i prefer stationary to rolling jams, as they tend to find it more difficult to kill you when they aren't moving). ____________________ China traffic/travel bike vid - When I make a sweeping statement, please add the word 'statistically' in to the sentence before you bitch...

Took them off for Cadwell (most people do and you are actually advised to). I went with Col to go and get some fuel (from everyones favourite garage ) and decided I didn't like road riding without mirrors at all. I guess I hadn't really noticed just how much I used them and how much I relied on them. ____________________ "Unlike public school you don't need to have your arse up and your head down to go a long way...." |

im not gonna win this so im just gonna sit on my hands and hum me thinks
(Altho still think when filtering all attention should be on what the deathboxes are doing infront off you, the sound of an R1 etc chipping up behind you at 80 odd should kind of alert you to their presence, but since i filter at quite a serviceable speed anyway i dont think they would be too aggravated) ____________________ China traffic/travel bike vid - When I make a sweeping statement, please add the word 'statistically' in to the sentence before you bitch...

Fair point Bendy, I wasn't being entirely serious.
Plus if you consider how much mirrors weigh, you might find you could filter as fast as the couriers without them. Why do you think no courier bikes have mirrors? ____________________ Gallery |

I couldn't ride a bike on the road without mirrors.
I had a go on G's RS250 and every time I came a junction I would look where the mirror is supposed to be and just see asphalt. |

Of course courier bikes have mirrors, they need 'em to hang their lids on when they stop for a fag.
I was replying to Mr Ricardo, btw, you just barged in and stopped my reply from making sense. Uncouth lout. |

I don't feel comfortable without mirrors on the road and it takes a good while to get used to not having them on on track.
But noone can claim they're the fastest on the road. There's always some idiot happy to go 50mph more than you, whether it's white van man, bored BMW sales rep or a Busa.
Also if you ever go out with mates (which encompasses most of my riding) I always want to know where they are - if they're keeping up, if they've noticed I'm indicating left, etc. Invaluable.
I can't stop glancing in them - it gives an all-round view. ____________________ www.bikegirl.co.uk |
