In the picture, buzzed up to me today and landed on my van about an inch from my face Laughing

It looks like a cross between a praying mantis and a dragonfly Laughing

I have no idea what it is, neither does my mum.. just curious really!

Looks like a wolf fly, the thing sticking out of it's arse is to inject it's eggs into other insects, snails & the like.

Can't find any pics of a wolf fly, but it does look very simlar to some Mayfly's.. although still looks different, but mayfly is getting closer still.

It's an Ichneumon fly, they lay eggs inside caterpillars which then eat them from the inside out while alive and finally emerge and cocoon themselves all around, nasty gits.

That Sabre wasp is slightly different (lay eggs into wood not caterpillars), can't tell what yours was, could be either, there's lots of species of Ichneumon all looking similar.
