Right then. Feel free to post any pics/stories of your favourite set-ups or your own
My mate just texted me saying there was a 10" Sub on Ebay (Star Sound or some shit) for 9.99. So I ummed. And told him to bid.
Now, I want to do a basic little sound system in my car (MG ZS)
Nothing serious, Im not doing it for a show, and I aint really bothered about super high quality audio. Yes, as with most things, I know I will get what I pay for
But, I wanna do this on the cheap.
So, is an Amp essential? Clearly if its not, I would still like to expand on the system eventually to get better quality.
I have a Kenwood head unit, it's a little older, but not ancient. No mp3 shit on it unfortunately (though I connect to my Ipod via tape ). It's currently connected to a 6 CD Auto Changer in the back also.
Edit: I also have 2x 6" Fli speakers that I can install alongside this.
What do I need, BCF Audio Gurus? ____________________ "Oh....it looks like Average Joe's is forfeiting the match!" - "Yeah, its a risky strategy but lets see if it pays off for 'em Cotton."

First you want to check the headunit, it should support 4 speakers at about 50w + a sub out if it is decent.
Check the speaker spaces in your car to see if the 6" fli speakers will fit in any of them, if not, lob them on the parcel shelf and leave the stock speakers at the front for now. Even just these 2 speakers at the back without a sub will give you a half decent sound.
As for the sub, don't buy that one on ebay. Try looking around abit more, look for a sub with a built in amp then you won't need to spend extra money on a seperate one. Fli trap subs are alright and you can pick them up fairly cheap off ebay (literally type in ebay 'fli trap sub' and theres a fair few results).
Really you need to set a budget and then get the best you can for that money. ____________________ ***Previous: GPR50, FZ750 *** Current: Monkey bike, yella SV 650 ***

Cheers for the advice Matthie.
Too late now, won it on ebay. I'll work with what I have. Im sure it will be a bit of a noticeable difference (even if its a bit better bass) than my usual speakers.
I did wire up the Fli's to my old rover, parcel shelf jobbie, so yeah I may do that again. Although, Im not keen on ruining my current parcel shelf. Hmm. Perhaps I shall create some corner boxes or something.
I cba fitting the speakers into the slots in the car, from memory, 6inch is a bit big for them all anyways.
Will have a look at fli trap subs, as I can always sell this one on to a mate for a fiver.
I wish I knew what type of head unit I have, infact...Im off to go find out. ____________________ "Oh....it looks like Average Joe's is forfeiting the match!" - "Yeah, its a risky strategy but lets see if it pays off for 'em Cotton." |

Ok, so it is ancient, and not in production anymore.

I forgot to mention you'll need to power the amp to, which I've done directly off the battery as it's got a switch on the back of the stereo to turn the amp on. ____________________ TheShaggyDA: I've got 3 or 4 pairs that predate my wife, so at least 11.5 years old. |

Personally, I would put the amp in the boot with the sub. ____________________ ***Previous: GPR50, FZ750 *** Current: Monkey bike, yella SV 650 ***

Fair. Any particular reason? Voltage loss between head to amp and between amp to sub difference?
Mind you, a few metres throughout the car wont make a ton of difference unless Im running a fucking xbox in the back with the engine off.
Ech, it's a bit of a head scratcher to work out where to route the wires, without spending much or ripping much apart, yet keeping it nice looking
I might actually install conduit, sprayed burnished silver. Like heating pipes above my head. ____________________ "Oh....it looks like Average Joe's is forfeiting the match!" - "Yeah, its a risky strategy but lets see if it pays off for 'em Cotton." |

I have mine located under the floor matts in the back, and the sub seat belted into the rear seats.
That way the dogs can't attack them.
I'd say it makes no real difference where you put them, but hard core ICE fans will say it does. ____________________ TheShaggyDA: I've got 3 or 4 pairs that predate my wife, so at least 11.5 years old. |

Yeah doesn't really matter where the amp is, I just think it would be easier to run the wiring straight from the back to the front without messing around with a amp on the way. ____________________ ***Previous: GPR50, FZ750 *** Current: Monkey bike, yella SV 650 ***

Good timez. Still would like Matthie's reasoning though.
I'm just gonna install random LED's everywhere in the car. And a few push buttons that look important (ie Electric Window buttons) that simply cause a buzzing noise instead of doing anything. Or set off a doorbell. ____________________ "Oh....it looks like Average Joe's is forfeiting the match!" - "Yeah, its a risky strategy but lets see if it pays off for 'em Cotton." |

If you want lights in your car, hook up some 12v lights to your speakers so they flash with the music. ____________________ ***Previous: GPR50, FZ750 *** Current: Monkey bike, yella SV 650 ***
