Hi,
i am 16 and thinking of getting a bike. I wondered what i can get at my age and what would be a good starter bike?
Roughly how many miles can you go on a tank of petrol?
Also how much would the insurance be?
Any info please
thanks Wink

When are you 17, it could effect your decision.

At 16 you can have either a 50cc twist n go moped or a 50cc 'proper' geared bike, that decision is entirely up to you as to what you prefer, personally if it was me i'd go for the geared bike then if at a later date you get a 125cc bike you've had experience of using the clutch and gears etc.

Have a look around on Ebay or on biketrader.co.uk and see whats available,I've never had a 50cc bike so I cant really comment on whats good or bad to be honest.

As for the insurance you're best bet really is to look at a few bikes that take your fancy then phone round a few insurance companies,if you buy a bike magazine (Ride or Bike are good'uns) theres loads of insurance ads in the back...give them a ring and get a few quotes.

As for how far a tank of fuel will go its not easy to answer that one,a 50cc bike should be very economical but a lot depends on how and where you ride.

Oh and don't forget that before you can ride anything you will have to complete the CBT course, look in the yellow pages or something similar to find training schools local to you.

Hope this helps...a bit Smile

What is the maximum speed that you are allowed to go on 50cc bikes is it something like 30mph even for the proper gears bikes???

There isn't a maximum speed it's more to do with the restrictions. To be legal, you must keep your 50cc restricted until you have passed your full test I believe. Now the amount of people who actually keep 50cc's restricted are few, but in my opinion, better safe than sorry!

Don't go buying anything without asking here first, you might regret it!

I was looking at the Aprilia RX50 before parents cut the idea out. Are you for a purely road bike or something that can go offroad as well? Motorhispania do some nice bikes and so do Aprilia. What I was doing was looking around, asking questions, looking at websites etc. www.biketrader.co.uk could well be your best asset, though don't buy a bike without looking at it first. If possible, take someone with you who knows about bikes to have a look at it. If it isn't right, look again!
hope this helps and doesn't confuse you too much!

Actually, at 16 you are restricted to 40mph as well as 50cc. Basically to stop people modding them to go faster.

At 16 you can only ride a moped.

Moped

A moped is a motorcycle which:

cannot go faster than 50km/h

must not have an engine over 50cc

can be moved by pedals, if the moped was used before 1 August 1977.

You are limited to 50km/h - which is about 30mph.
