I was out for a run today, running along the canal, headphones listening to my music quite loud (i.e. couldn't hear things approaching from behind, bad I know). Just jogging along and then I heard/sensed something coming from behind (and not my arse), before I could turn to look it was level with me...

It was a Suzuki dzr400, odd I though, then I noticed the rider had police written across the back of his jacket...

I have never given it any thought but I presumed that they wouldn't be allowed to do this? I'd say a canal should have the same rules as a bridal way? Anyone shed any light on this.

I was going to take a photo but I was a bit slow with my phone to take one.

It was the Leeds-Liverpool canal (at the Leeds end), so I guess it is a good thing they patrol the canal as I bet they are dodgy, in some places (read some of Ariel's posts). Although I am un-sure if it was a patrol or a quick short cut!

I actually clocked some scumbag riding a DT125 down by the canal next to my university (Chester). He had no helmet or gear so I presumed it was stolen hence why he was taking the canal dirt track.

Other than that I can't say I have seen anyone else?

I saw something like this on one of the many cop programs a few weeks back. Rozzers on drz400's I think, riding on illegal lanes, through fields, parks etc looking for "nuisance bikers" .... All I heard was being above the law blah blah blah Razz Sorry to get back on topic guys Laughing

LCC have a few bikes that patrol the Leeds parks. All off roaders and fitted with video cams.
Could well have been one of these. Often seen pottering around in the parks filming people upto no good. Maybe they have expanded out to the toe paths as well now.

But you are correct the toe path is a bridle way for the most part. Only short bits have right of way to cars etc. Which is why they have the anti bike gates.

Police in Mitcham have a Off-road BMW.

Said its for the joyriders on the common. Rolling Eyes

Seen him about alot, Standing next to it. Talking to people.
Seems to me much more of a deterrent rather than a tool.

As to riding them on footpaths, I will stop next time I see him and ask him. Thumbs Up

A few years ago, there was one of those police dirt bikes around town. It sounded un-naturally quiet. Any ideas how they do this ? Just a special exhaust ?

Th original poster mentions the bike coming up from behind without him hearing it much. Sensing it rather than hearing it.

They're a fucking good idea. I got sent flying a couple of years ago by some little shit on an obviously stolen DT racing up a local bridle path. Since the plod started patrolling the area on a couple of Husqvarna in livery the number of ditched and stolen burned out vehicles has plummeted.

Hah, swear words. There y'go karma grass hopper, fuckin' ave it.

Cyclists at 20mph are the biggest goons. Most don't own a bell or let on.
Get a bell you nobs, and slow down past walkers.
As with all towpath traffic i keep away from the water, let them do the maneuvers.
