I didnt have much to do last so i switched on the TV, saw something that looked remotely interesting about Japan, unfortunatly its hosted by Charley 'by any means' Boorman.

The programme seemed to be simply about his travels from his home town to Tokyo for no reason other than he wants to go on a jolly. He obviously has no care for the environment either (the programme trys to show he's a caring chap) as he parades around poor parts of the world aided by aerial shots from a helicopter, panning shots from his convoy of crew in trucks and him on various modes of transport. He has the mind of an infant and the interview techniques of a broom.

I thought it was all right actually.

Sure, he's on a jolly but if you can make a living by going on a jolly then why the heck not? I'm sure Killa that you would if you could.

He's way better at presenting than a lot of people who do these travelog type programmes. The other week I watched an episode of Jamie Oliver in the USA or whatever its called. It made me feel physically ill when he started calling everyone "Bruvvah" and "Sistah" the stupid wide tongued mockney pratt.

Charley Borman is positively electric compared to him. He doesn't overact, he doesn't do the whole Ewan Mcgregor "This could end the whole trip" rubbish. He has genuine reactions to genuine people. And sure, he's a bit of a spoilt brat, and its amusing that he hates flying, hates ships and gets car sick (and he is totally terrified of snakes) but I found it to be compelling viewing.

You also can't deny that he's good on a dirt bike. I found the biking bits of this series to be particularly interesting.

I thought it was good.

I acutally think he has listened to fans and viewers, he was critisised for all the over the top support on LWD and LWR, so he made the first By any means last year, and they travelled really light, only 3 of them I think. While it probably made a good trip, it made terrible TV.

I think this series was a good balance between the two, and think it worked pretty well. Anyone who says he still has too many crewmembers, needs to go and try and film a proper tv series all round the world...you will need your camera, backup, spare lenses and parts. Multiple batteries, multiple tripods, microphones, tape stock. Multiple chargers and adpters for the batteries.

It gets bulky and heavy pretty quick. I've filmed a fashion show once, just one camera and a monitor, and it filled half a Mercedes vito.

Also, as said, if you realised tomorrow, you could get paid a good wage (let alone a huge one) for travelling the world on a bike, you are saying you would turn it down?

I got to agree with MarJay and AngelGrinder on this one. Having watched LWD/LWR I was not a Boorman fan at all. So much so that I hardly watched any of the first series of By Any Means. However, I watched all of this series and quite enjoyed it, especially the one in Papua New Guinea.

As said above, he has found a good compromise on who/what to take and the places he visits are interesting, as are the people.

Beside all that, there were fit oriental girls and custom cars/bikes in the last episode and that's enough to keep my eyes watching even if the brain isn't .

The programme was together with some good editing, he is a poor presenter, interviewer.
He was given facts to say about the place he is in and i didnt feel like he was worthy of anything he was doing. No i dont care for the environement really, its just that when you imagine the cost of this 'jolly' it's a little rediculous. Apart from him, i enjoyed anything without him in it, images and the people he met were great. I did like the custom bikes and cars on the episode i saw but i wont be going back to watch anymore of it.

I also thought that his reaction to the Hiroshima anniversary memorial event was absolutely spot on. He didn't get political, he didn't put on crocodile tears, he just looked genuinely moved by it all.

I thought he got the balance very right.

I quite liked it.

The first series was a load of gash and I haven't watched LWD. LWR can't really be topped, ok CB had his moments, but they both at times became simpering celebs. I didn't feel it detracted from the show as a whole though.

I've really enjoyed this latest By Any Means. I think the way he's interacted with people he's met has been really quite human, none of that fake BBC philanthropic snobbery you get from the more high brow presenters. He comes across as a fairly ordinary guy being slightly overwhelmed by what must be the trip of a life time, hold on, ummm, another trip of a life time... Again... Ummm...

I can't help but feel there's a degree of envy among his detractors. Before and during the initial stages of LWR for example, CB was an out of work actor trying to get by as a self-employed painter and decorator. While his parents are fairly well heeled in terms of paper wealth, I don't think it necessarily transfers down to him.

Also, and I say this everytime, if the detractors were offered the opportunity to do what he's done; something tells me they wouldn't hesitate. And finally, (this always bugs my tits.) When people say (not here necessarily) that it shouldn't be on the telly at all as it's so shite... You're not the only person in the country with a TV. Stop being so solipsistic, just watch something else.

Charlie Boreman seems to be like marmite on here, I'm not quite sure why he generates such ire... Well, I am actually, but it says more about those putting him down than it does about him.

Bit of a silly question about, would you take the opportunity. Its a bit like saying, who wants to be a millionaire?

Ive got nothing against him as a person, he's, pleasent.
But he's no Michael palin, i think id rather eat a handful of corks than listen to what he has to say.

As i said, the best bits of this programme, didn't include him.

You can butter it all you like Broon, Boormans a Sap. If you relate to him more because he is and because he likes bikes then fair play to you. Ive only seen a handful of Palins visits to places. Colonies or not, listening to what he has to say about what he's seeing, unscripted and naturally was worth the air time. When it came to talking to the people he met it wasn't at all like Boormans child like Q&A time, "What does it taste like?" "How old are you?" "Have you tasted this?"

Seems like reasonable enough questions to me for a throw-away weekend telly program. If it's ground breaking discourse your looking for then you should watch the culture show, Palin's efforts are no more or less endowed to my knowledge.

You can butter Palin up all you like too, like Boorman, they are both bumbling Englishmen doing the rounds, each are entertaining in different ways. Palin might put across more from an educational point of view, but whats wrong with just being entertained?

Boorman might be a sap, but Palin comes over as an upper class fop casting a sardonic eye over the masses of the ex-colonies, its swings and roundabouts.

Have you guys read the books? They are really really well written, and easy to read. I recently finished off By Any Means - which gives you a lot more insight than the tv series.

May inspire people to visit some of the places he has been too, certainly made me add a few more places to my ever expanding list of 'must visits.'

I have recorded the lot of this latest series, and have got to Papua New Guinea and the off-roading section, which is really good viewing.

I like it that he is so passionate about the work he does for UNICEF. And as others have suggested, he is good presenter material, watchable, animated and is scared about some things. Which gives the series a real human element.
