There is a 1988 YAM FZR 750R for sale, locally, (relatively cheap); I do not want to know what its worth.
What I would like to know is what the known problems with this model are?
What are they like for home maintenance?
I should point out, that this will be purely a “weekend” bike, and I won’t be commuting on it.
I just want to know what it’s like owning this bike.
Would I just be buying a world of trouble?

Any comments much appreciated.

Cheers
Sid

That'll be an OW01 then. Which will almost certainly have been raced - that'll be the biggest problem, I would imagine Wink

Not sure about that, there is nowhere here, (Cyprus), to have raced it.
It is advertised with a very low mileage for the year, (taken with a pinch of salt, obviously), which adds weight to your theory, but it was not economic to import a larger capacity 2nd hand bike here before 2004.

Anyway, any known issues I should look for?

Cheers

Hi

Depends on the model.

If it is an OW01 (unlikely, as not sure they were out by then and if for sale it wouldn't be cheap) then it is the Yamaha equivalent to an RC30. Titanium rods in the engine, etc.

More likely it is the 750 version of the FZR1000 Genesis that came to the UK. In which case pretty solid and reliable.

All the best

Keith

No, they were quite a few years later.

All the best

Sorry Embarassed .

Don't think the original FZR750 was sold here in the UK. We got the 1000 which had a more powerful larger engine (but basically the same lump) but with cheaper suspension.

All the best

Thanks for the input.

Should I assume, then, that, other than the normal problems, you would expect to find on a 21 year old bike, there is nothing that stands out as needing particular attention, on this particular bike.

What are they like to own and run?

Cheers

Hi

The 4 pot calipers came from a time when Yamahas had special quick seize calipers.

Engine wise think it is much the same as the FZ750. In which case very tough. You rarely need to touch the valves. Only weak point is the bearing behind the front sprocket which needs a complete engine strip to replace. Tends to only be a problem when people overtighten the chain.

All the best

Keith

If it's an OW01, very few were used on the road, so finding anyone who can give you much info might be a problem. If it's got no obvious damage and runs and rides OK then you would expect it to be reliable for road use. If it hasn't got Ohlins suspension than it's not an OW. Has it got Ohlins suspension? Wink

Only seen photos at the moment, might arrange a viewing for the weekend.

Thanks

Hi

Any chance you could post the pics?

The OW01 wasn't launched until 1989.

All the best

Also be checking the rear suspension shock and linkages, the fzrs and similar of around this age have alot of shagged rear suspension setups,

Hi

Agree with Tutton, but some were pretty shagged when new with a fair amount of play.

All the best

If you want a laugh have a look at the price of some of the other bikes on the web site!

If you click on the union jack near the top of the page you should get the english version.

Gets the blood pressure up just thinking about those prices.
And you thought you were paying over the odds in the UK.

Cheers

Hi

Just the FZR750 Genesis (like the 1000 we got in the UK)

Still has the original exhaust.

However looks a bit rough in places. Bar end weight missing. Resprayed. Subframe looks bent.

All the best

Keith
