As some may know the head gasket went on my XR a while back so it was engine out to change... along with some other planned work.

Anyway, firstly I found the auto decomp system was fucked, thats now finally been fixed and just needs putting back together with timing and valve clearances done.

Today I took the right side engine case off to clean the filter screen...

First thing I spotted on removal was the clutch bearing was missing half its ball bearings!! When I took the clutch pressure plate off the bearing just collapsed completely, I've been having some issues with the clutch when riding , not sure what affect the fooked bearing would have?

However, all the pressure plates seem to be within tolerances, but the springs meausure up at 27mm "free spring" yet the manual says they should be 37mm!!! Does this sound even possible or have the springs potentially been uprgraded/wrong springs? I'm thinking this could well be why the clutch slips at times.. the tolerances for friction plates is between 2.8 and 3.2 i think it was, the limit was lower than 2.8... mine maeusre around 3mm so they should be fine.

Found loads of random bits of metal in the bottom of engine Sad cleared out as much as I can with a magnetic screwdriver, guess I need to buy some cheap car oil and flush it through before I do the decent oil??

p.s I have no idea how that engine was still running and riding fairly well and reliably.... guess that's Honda's for you!!

Yea, I'd definitely go for cheap car oil; ideally do a few runs through.
I'd do filters, possibly once before flushing and once after and give any screens it's got a good looking over between each flush.

The screen in the engine is an absolute bitch to get to so once that goes back in it's staying in.. I'll check and reclean the frame screen though as that's more accessible.

Not sure I should replace filter though as I only put it in 1 ride ago Sad or should I do it anyway considering I've found metal in the engine? Sad

I think I'd definitely replace it at least one - maybe inspect first. Little shards of metal could have made miniature holes in it, possibly letting more through, etc.
Probably none of this is required, but I'd see it as a kind of insurance and for peace of mind, so you've got the best chance that there aren't more bits of metal floating around in your engine.

Is it a canister filter or a non canister one?

If it is a plain one, the you should be able to inspect it pretty well. If the paper isn't damaged, then just wash it in petrol/paraffin, let it dry, then re-install it. Do your car oil run, then drop the oil and put proper oil and a new filter in. Thumbs Up
