Speedometer

Can any one give me some info on this. About 10 mins ago i was on the M5 doing about 70mph, over took a car and pulled back in to lane 1 to find my speedo was reading 0. Cancled the journey and headed back home. GUTTED, FELT AS IF I WAS RIDING BLIND. Any one know how to fix this......... Cheers

First thing to check is your speedo cable. Unscrew it at the wheel end and see if the internal cable has broken.

I'll do that tommorow. If it is the cable that is broke is it just a case of getting a new one or is it more complicated than that or is it a garage job

Surley you could have carried on. I haven't had a speedo on my old RS for over a year now. You shouldn't be looking at it anyway, just judge your speed on the cars/ things around you.

I never use a speedo (except for MOT) your own ability and a rev counter is all you need.

Yeah I don't like not having a speedo but thats only cos of cameras.

I can judge up to about 30 ok but over that and it gets a bit blurry.

You should be able to get speed from revs and gear tho, althought admittedly working it out to begin with could be hard with no speedo.

as stated you should be able to judge without the speedo, i learned after i sheard the cable on my bike i just use the revs and speed of cars in front

Personally if I is easy to get to unbolt it at the clock end get wheel the bike forward (you may need help) see if the inner of the cable is turning if it is grab it with you fingers and put some light resistance against it to see if it stops turning, then take the other end off and put a drill on it turn it slowly and see if the other end of the cable spins.


If the cable doesn't spin and you can stop it either time you need a new cable.

If it doesn't spin when being wheeled forward but does with the drill there is a problem with the speedo unit at the wheel/gearbox

If it spins both times fine you have a problem in your clocks.


You hope it is the first one as it is the cheapest/easiest option.

Agreed. Speedo cables are quite cheap anyways.

I'm also in disbelief that you went back home. I've gone on trips hundreds of miles long on country A roads without a working speedometer, although granted country roads have fewer speed cameras.

Is the RF600 a mechanical speedo? If so then do as above, if not and it is electrical then check sensors and wiring.

For speed traps, with no speedo you just follow other vehicles or go very slow - enough people do this in front of speed traps not to be suspicious.
For the rest of the time, I would be worried if your speedo was the main judge of safety. You don't happen to work for a 'safety camera partnership' do you?

When I got busted ages ago I found I could actually judge the speed at the position they described ten minutes previously pretty accurately.
I took what I thought and knocked a few mph off, which did turn out to be a few mph below what they said. I didn't want to draw attention to the fact there wasn't even a needle on the clocks.

It's quite possible your speedo cable has just vibrated out of one end too, doing it up may be all you need to do.

Speedo is not an MOT point, although you do need a working speedo on the road. One of those things which could pass and MOT yet still be illegal.

It happened to me last month. I removed the speedo rotor and it was 2 piece. Superglue usually works if your problem is the same. I just put them back as I don't think I need a speedo.

Only got one life line. Just passed bike and car tests last month, did'nt want tae take the chance , yea know..........
