Hey guys,

I got a little situation and i cant make my mind up what t do. Ive been riding for 4 n half years about and im also 20 years old, i own a 2008 R6 on a 58 plate. I use it as my main mode of transport and pleasure as i cant really afford to run another. I love the bike to pieces but ive nearly done 14,000 miles on it and im worrying that if i keep hold of it it will not fetch me a nice amount back for trade in. Or worse *blow up*

My options ive chosen are,

1. Keep it untill october 2010 when warranty runs out and trade it for an R1. (My dream bike) Then i can start again.

2. Keep it, upgrade things, and see how long it lasts? I bought some down pipes afew months back but need an end can and power comander aswell. I dont really want to upgrade if i sell it next year.

I love my bike but im scared of the fact that i use it everyday and i have gotten very paranoid with every odd noise tick etc it makes thinking somthings going to go wrong. Its just had the throttle bodies changed to 2009s through warrenty cos they went faulty.

What do you guys think then?

Thanks Laughing

a) Bikes are a shit investment and you'll already get a crap trade in cos you've committed the cardinal sin of actually using it.

b) There's no reason why it should blow up as long as you maintain it. I'm guessing it hasn't even had its first major service (usually at 16k) yet.

c) What could possibly need upgrading on an '08 bike?

Running it everyday isn't going to make it blow up provided to look after it.

don't rag the bike from cold and do plenty of oil and filter changes and it'll be fine.

14,000 miles is nothing. I think people believe bikes cannot last as high milage as cars because the majority of bikes for sale are low milage just because most people don't ride every day and keep them as toys. The british weather also impacting on the amount of use they get.

It's all about how well the bike has been looked after and maintained. I'm sure there are bikes with 40,000 miles on them that are in better condition than some bikes with half that.

This dilemma is one of the reasons I favour older (usually very cheap) bikes. But 14K is just nicely bedded in for modern engines. Just keep it and ride it and stop worrying.

If you're concerned about the depreciation then you shouldn't bought new. Laughing

It's an 08 bike, it's got loads of life left unless you do something spectacularly bad with it. Are you keeping it serviced (either DIY servicing or dealer servicing) and looking after it vaguely well?

if you look after it and keep it well maintained then you could easy score 50k miles on it without much problems

You got a 08 and your worried about it blowing up..... Unless you are really hamfisted or tweek it too much its not really going to happen.
Remember that tweeking will invalidate the warrenty.

Using a bike everyday won't harm it. They are designed to be used. You are not doing high milage. Guess you are doing around 1 K a month.
I do nearly 700 a month just comuting on a 10 year old bike.... I never listen for noises..... Would never get anywhere if i did Wink

Stop worrying and enjoy the bike. Don't think of the next one till you are ready for it.

You also often get more for a private sale than a trade in Thumbs Up

Thanks youve boosted my confidence up, Im thinking of keeping it then and maybe gettin and little 125 for my everyday purpose drives to work. Yes the bike is serviced by dealer at intervals. Although i do like to get my petrols worth and give it a good thrashing which one put me in jail if i ever got caught lol.

I always let the coolant temp warm up to 40 degrees before even riding off and give it anther 10 mins before giving it some revs.

I know that being 20 is very young and gettin an r1 may be a bad step to make as ive got a long life of biking Smile

I hear that you shouldn't really do this.

I hear the best thing is to ride off pretty much like 15 seconds after starting but just take it easy.

I don't know why but I'm sure someone on here will.

Maybe it helps the oil get all round the engine more quickly or something.

If you can afford a new R6 - an old R1 can be got quite cheaply. If you can hack the riding position, not a bad commuter bike Smile. Definitely get one for less than the price of a new commuter 125. Insurance may be more of an issue, but may be able to get an ok multi-bike policy.

I wanted a big bike after owning a recent (at the time) 600 at 22. I got one, found it wasn't massively faster and ended up working my way back down the power levels, 'till I've settled on 40-50hp for fun, more for getting from A to B.

OMG a 58 reg R6 might BLOW UP at ANY TIME! Holy crap!

You're sitting on a ticking TIME BOMB!

Sell it to me now, its completely worthless. I'll take it off your hands for 50 quid.

To echo david_m213, it probably isn't a good idea. When cold the injection system will richen the mixture, and a rich mixture will wash the oil from the bores. Just sitting idling is going to warm it up very slowly. I would say just ride it asap, but keep the revs down until it is up to temperature.

All the best

Wait until your married with kids and a house to pay for, mate.
I'm reduced to the bargin bin on fleabay at the moment.

I don't want to come across as bitter mate just jealous.

Unless you fancy swapping the R6 for twin girls Laughing

Most bikes last forever and ever, if maintained properly. If you bought the bike with investment in mind - why the heck did you take it out the box...its should be in mint condition and living in your lounge?

Bikes are for riding. Most people who buy bikes are aware that most have mileage - otherwise what is the point...other than having it in your lounge looking pretty.

Best bet is never to buy brand new. That way you're guaranteed not to lose money as you ride away from the place you bought it. Thumbs Up
