The old paraquat stuff was great .... just needed to be applied when it was dry ... and in summer you could watch the leaves wilt in a matter of minutes Thumbs Up

Roundup however needs to be applied during the growing season (it works its way into the plant and kills down to roots) ... and as it needs to slowly be absorbed, you need to apply when it is dry for a day or so.

There was some white powder stuff that you could but that would basically sterilise the ground ... cant remember its name tho.

Doesnt matter what time of year, but you should try and pick a fairly dry and definitely NON-WINDY day. Even though its not like the old paraquat weedkillers, its still not good to breathe in Roundup into your lungs.

Try and lock any pets indoors, at least until its dried onto the plants.

I prefer "Deadfast", sodium chlorate.
Works faster.

You can't use Deadfast on gardens that you wanna plant in within the next 6 months. But if you just wanna clear weeds to put your bike on or something, then I'd go with Deadfast.

I'd use the roundup simply because it's safe to use with pets so avoids any drama if the dog accidentally gets into the garden.

Unless you're in any rush, it would be better to wait until spring since the plants will be actively growing then and therefore draw the weedkiller into their system better/faster I believe.

PS if you don't want to plant for an awful long time, you could just use salt - it pretty much kills the soil. We did this on the back alleyway to keep a clearish path for our bikes and it is very effective.

Standard cheap table salt will do. We bought 8 bags of Sainsbury's basic salt (under a kg I think per bag) for about £2.50 at a time - that's all they put out on the shelf or we would have bought more. Took about 3 trips to kill the soil in an area smaller than yours. Salt was applied simply using a sieve to spread it around before it was about to rain (or you could just dilute it in water).

I'd imagine you'd need more than that, but it's very good with brambles - we had some outside our back gate which kept coming back quickly with the deadliest weedkiller we could find with not much success until the salt...

If your hedge trimmer works, I'd use it to get rid of the bulk before they start growing if you can get away with it.

Ok ... looking at that last pic, here is my professional opinion.
Unsure how much you want to spend ... but this will sort it proper.

1) Go to local hire shop and get a petrol strimmer with blades (bush cutters).
2) Set about the area with that bad boy for an afternoon.
3) Leave it a week for new shoots to pop up.
4) Find 2 dry days and in the middle blitz the land with roundup.
5) Rotovate, if you can afford to hire one, a week later.
6) Carpet the area with that Sodium stuff (thanks Hellkat, that was the white power I remember).

Be deader than Jacksons nose after that.

Have you considered the idea of making an account but not naming it so obviously and not being a twat? That way, people won't immediately know that you're covdude so you won't get lots of people immediately setting you as enemy and if you're not being a twat then people aren't going to give you Thumbs Down karma.

you've got 1 problem. a garden timebomb. i only noticed the friend thing from that thread. i dont think it helps you if you just add people.
just get banned again, then come back as cantdude or candude or bitchdude or gardendude or dude.

or just post shit that is approved by the jeremy kyle unemployed layabouts that inhabit this forum to gain karma, so it isnt affected when you decide to post something that's likely to get worthwhile comments. it works Wink

Well I was going to suggest a weed burner so you didn't have to pour poison all over your garden.

Having seen the pictures may I now suggest this instead.

Ah that's fun stuff that!!

Who cares if it supposedly has a "fire suppressant", its still potent enough for some "entertainment".....
