Just wandering about the statistics of bike accidents. If you have been in an accident was it your fault? If not was there anything you could have done to avoid it such as different riding position or being more defencive? I know the real answer would be to have been in a different place but we all know that after the event.

The reason I ask if because a mate says that all bike accidents are the bikers fault whereas in built up areas I would have thought it would have been car drivers that causes the accidents?

An uninsured female driver pulling out in front of me thats what!

And she wouldn't have stopped either, only reason why she did is cos the police happened to be passing as the accident happened!

(No offence intended to any Lady Drivers who read this as there are some very good ones Wink)

I got knocked off by a boy racer in a van. No way I could've avoided him as he went straight onto the wrong side of the road in an attempt to stop me filtering past him, he stopped but only to tell me it was my fault and drove off, I got his reg and he got banned. Razz

I've had to stacks on the road both were my own fault, getting giddy racing a Nova( Embarassed Embarassed at least I was winning)
and sliding off turning left into a junction on gravel.

a van got in the way

not being in a such a hurry would have prevented the crash

his manouvre was not 100% by the highway code, if it was i wouldnt have hit him, but it was as much my fault for going stupidly fast on a busy motorway

but i had a long week and wanted to get home, lesson learnt

Hi

Only one involving another vehicle. I was on a roundabout and a car drove straight on to the roundabout and into the side of me.

All the best

Hi

Yes I did, but the turds were not moving under their own steam so don't really count as other vehicles.

All the best

Inexperience caused my first accident.

I'd had my bike 8 months, doing the North Circular Road commute. The traffic was very heavy that day. It was very cold and there had been a frost the night before. I approached a junction (Madeley Rd) after which is a petrol station. In front of me were two lorries and I filtered into the middle of the road & started accelerating, by the petrol station, only for a Mini Metro to appear 20 feet in front of me. I hit the brakes, but as I was on the white lines, the bike slid from under me. I dived right, and the bike ended up under his car.

I got all my costs and uninsured losses but I'm a little more careful around lorries and junctions!

TBH 99% of bike accidents are our fault, in that we were doing something naughty usually. Hell how many people have been stoically stuck at the speed limit and someone has rammed into them.

Usually more defensive riding etc would have saved the day, but thats boring Twisted Evil

As for me, my first on the crosser was taking on too much too soon (going from 12 brake to about 70 within a week of learning to ride round a carpark Neutral), second was me not knowing the peril of dyno driven lights (altho less my fault, and more the shitty 6v battery needing dyno driven lights), then me naughtily going across a lawn, to find it had been thoroughly watered.. (whoooooosh *ow* Crying or Very sad etc) and my last incident altho i stayed on the bike, overleaning round a roundabout, altho it could have been diesel... haha honest.

ps arent ALL crashes these days deisel... Rolling Eyes

Both times I crashed from being far too over confident. I was braking at about 100% both times for a corner, trusting the road surface too much when it turned out to have gravel/mud/shit on it.

Lesson learnt - allow yourself some time and space for road shite.

I sens the next one isnt too far off as the end of my road has loose chippings on it, every time i turn into it i hear it under my front wheel and a few times the front has skidded a bit
