I agree with ms51ves3, it looks like carb icing.

So your fuel has frozen? Or has some water got in your tank and frozen at the bottom stopping any petrol getting out.

Where are you anyway? It's not even that cold here any more.

This is what I thought, turns out there was no jubilee clip on the fuel line on this bike. Uncover it this morning to start work and bam

I had this on my MZ fuel tap one day.

Petrol was leaking out from the water trap bowl lip and running down the fuel line.

My thinking is that as the petrol evaporates it is working as a very effective refrigerant and cooling down the carb body well below zero. Thus the moisture in the atmosphere condenses on the cold carb leaving a pretty ice pattern.

I'm pretty sure its not got much to do with ambient temperatures being below freezing as when the MZ froze it was a cold (but nowhere near freezing) day. When I got hope and noticed the leak I duly turned off the fuel tap (to save fuel being wasted) and as soon as the flow of cooling petrol stopped the ice soon melted Crying or Very sad

as someone said, fuel systems can get pretty cold due to evaporative cooling - had a banjo fitting iced up last time I pulled my tank

Easy test - does it melt when you touch it?

yes = ice
no = salt

Ah and carb icing refers to ice forming on the inside of the carb due to the drop in pressure around the venturi and the evaporating fuel.

When aluminium furs up it is alu oxide, the white powdery stuff.

Ice melts when heated so try melting it with your finger.

If is hard a sharp crystal like and doesn't melt it is salt.

That's the result of a fuel leak - fix the leak and it will stop.

Well its not the fuel freezing straight up, I don't know how cold it would have to be to freeze petrol but I'm sure it would be at least -25 degrees, probably colder.

Its the cooling formed by the petrol evaporating.

I guess that could also explain why it makes furry/spikey patterns radiating out from the source of the leak rather than just hanging down (due to gravity) in a frozen icycle type affair

On mine it also wouldn't shock me if there was guite a high water content in there as well as fuel...LOL

Regards
Rob
