hi all,
ive recebtly passed my test on my nsr125. the thing is ive become addicted to that 2 stroke power band. ther is no feeling like it and i feel a 4 stroke would be dull after my nsr. can anyone reccomend a bigger 2 stroke that will be great fun but also fairly reliable.
thanks Thumbs Up

Big. 2 stroke. reliable.

sorry but ya gotta laugh! Laughing

anyway, the YPVS is about the biggest sports 2 stroke around, they are about as reliable as a drunk teenager however. great fun bike, if your prepared to put up with the constant running repairs.

If you're into classic bikes, which I doubt, the Suzuki T500 Cobra could fit the bill. Only trouble is, reliability on a 30 yr old two-stroke might not be existent.

An RD350 might be a bit more reliable than the sportier strokers and there still pretty quick. In general two strokes aren't very reliable though.

Mudmucks: CR500's are pretty cool but are not that easy to make road legal.

They made a KH750 triple two stroke, crazy machines! Would rip your arm off if they could (and sometimes they could)! They gave something like 23mpg and a pint of oil every 80 miles! Shocked Didn't handle either, so as a practicle bike they were useless!

Rg500s were the best of the 80's two stroke race replicas apparantly, but again they arn't really practicle and can't see them being reliable.

Hi

Not sure how much bigger bike you want. The RD350YPVS and the original TZR250 both manage around 120mph and are fairly reliable if left standard. Both can be made to go faster, at which point they become about as reliable as the paper holder in a submarines outside toilet.

The RGV and KR1 are less reliable but quicker, same for the Aprilia RS250.

The RD500 / RG500 / NS400 are again quicker but more dated and more likely to have been abused (and also now going up in value).

Failing that get a new carbed Bimota V Due for about £10000, but be prepared to wait for spare parts to be shipped to you.

All the best

Keith

RD350, they kick out 45hp at there peak so I would imagen the power band is pretty savage, I guess you should ask G: https://www.bikechatforums.com/viewtopic.php?t=20556 (sorry, couldn't resist!) Laughing

Apparantly the engines soldier on for about 25K if looked after and not tuned (reliabilty suffered a lot when these bikes were tuned). If your interested in buying these bikes, the the things to look for are cracked exhausts (from viberations apparantly), slipping clutch and cracked rubber manifolds. According to UMG the Calipers dont last long and neither do swing arm bearings, monoshock linkages or rear shocks. As you will have already imagened, these bikes seem to be pretty high maintance, but I cant imagen many bikes giving the same smiles per pound when working Thumbs Up .

Cheers, Jonathan

According to this ancient issue of UMG, "some seized up after about 15k, others did twice that before needing a rebuild,. Those on the road vary beetween bikes about to blow up (as much from amateur tuning efforts as fast wear components) and the odd good'un. "

I guess unless it's been excessivly tuned (or abused) then 25K to 30K is fair to expect from yours, sounds a good one anyway Thumbs Up . Other things to look for on the KR1 are the chassis bearings (especially the rear wheel bearings), dodgy KIPS valves, blown rear shock, snapped fairing stays and leaking base gaskets. Severe piston slap is a sign that the top end needs overhalling soon. UMG also mentions not to get ones that have been raced. As standard the KR1 produces 60 hp and is good for 130 Very Happy and 35 mpg Sad .

Theres quite a nice one on ebay at the moment thats almost done 20,000!:

Hope this helps, Jonathan
