|
Went to get new chain and sprockets fitted today since been putting it off for months. But disaster apparently the front drive shaft is too badly worn to replace the front sprocket and needs replacing but been told it would cost more than the bikes worth to replace the front drive shaft.
Apparently the rear sprocket had also near enough undone itself due to the front sprocket jumping about on the drive shaft and that the suspension is set on the softest setting so very bouncy.
The 2 option he said I had was either keep running it until it dies since it would cost too much to repair of do a temp fix by welding a new front sprocket onto the shaft and stiffening up the Hagon rear shock
I'm completely lost at what to do?
How expensive a job is it?
Is there a cheaper option? ____________________ Past bike: 2004 Hyosung Comet

Is it worn as in the splines are gone? If so weld a new front sprocket on. You'll get another 5k miles out of it.

Hi
I would be surprised if it is that worn without there being other symptoms, and I can't see the rear sprocket coming unbolted just due to the front sprocket moving (the chain will absorb the movement).
Can you take off the front sprocket cover and take a piccy?
As to the shock, how stiff that should be will depend on your weight, etc. Adjusting it should be a simple job.
All the best

Yep apparently the splines have got too worn down.
someone on another forum has mentioned using chemical metal?
Since i'm fairly mechanically inept.
As for the rear shock it's a fairly new Hagon mono-shock which to ajust you need to take off apparently? ____________________ Past bike: 2004 Hyosung Comet

I had a bike that was worth £5-600 when a gear went inside the box. Local garage quoted me £1100 to fix it. Probably total bollocks, they just didn't want the job. Bought the gears for it for £110 and fixed it myself in a few hours.
A bike a garage says isn't worth it, isn't worth it for them. Provided the cost of fixing is less that the cost of a replacement bike i'd say do it yourself. At very least get it all appart and see what you think before buying parts. At the very least you'll learn something |

As Kickstart said, can we have a photo of the shaft?
A quick squirt with the mig isn't going to melt the output shaft seal. Welding on a sprocket is a mighty bodge but it need not be done just the once. It would be possible to change the sprocket by grinding back the weld. The temper of the shaft would be affected by the welding though and if the splines are completely gone the weld would be carrying the whole load of the engine.
Building up the splines with weld and filing to shape isn't that much of a bad idea, but would be a lot of work and of course the new spline tops would not be hardened. Keeping the shaft greased would help reduce wear. ____________________ a.k.a 'Geri'
