|
Well,
after allll the hassle i was having with the 4st engine on my other bike I picked up an nsr
Think i might be regretting it a touch in the sense i took up up the road and back and Baaaaa, what can i say...
Scaarrryyyy, very very very different to the import 4st supermoto!
I havnt riden for a few months so i'm going to forget everything i thought i knew about being able to ride and back to starting off again as this thing corners like a freight train!
Got to get the insurance sorted in the morning and then time to clock up a few rides round the block!
I guess what i'm a little concerned that this all just went to well...
The bike feels solid, the guy i bought it from was an absolute champ and rode it from portsmith back to luton following us (interesting when having to keep off motorways) and that bike did phenomenally well keeping up with the 2l mazda we were in! Only stopped briefly for some fuel and it was pretty much constantly riding for 2+ hours.
The bike came with another engine, some extra fairings, radiator, indicators and lots of other bits (front wheel?!?!?) all scavaged from half another nsr he had there.
Seriously pokey from 5k-8k'ish but tails off (all guessed from first gear on my street).
Am really looking forward to getting onto this bike and had to put up a post heh.
Any thoughts would be much appreciated about what i should look at on this bike over the next few weeks, change oil, water... ???
He took me over the bike and said it had fresh oil, water and such (water was clear, have the left over oil for the engine) and am not to sure what else to look at?
Chain looks pretty clean and lubricated, break pads look good and pretty sharp...
I hope this bike doesnt cr*p out on me like my last... although i do have a honda dealership near by just incase (not that i probly wont try a little myself at home first heh).
Well played to anyone that makes it to the end of this ramble!
Best regards

indeed,
keith will know :p
I know there is engine oil in the engine and that there is 2st oil in the reserve where it should be under the tank as the guy "opened her up" with me (btw, anyone know there is even a kind of bonnet pole to hold the tank up like a car haha!).
But yeah, the bike has been ridden right up to the sale by the seller and the seller road it from plimouth to luton following me (awesome chap) so i'm pretty happy the bikes functional
i'm jst still curious about this antifreeze issue.
Maybe the tank i'm thinking of is a coolant tank which holds some of the fluid that circulates round the cooling system...
Would get some antifreeze in there buts its late and nowhere open to get it from The bikes under a cover and was kept outside previously so i figure it should be okay for tonight.
Cheers for the replys though guys!
Any ideas what else i should maybe look at?
Best regards

General service items like the gearbox oil, pads, chain etc. Not too sure about service intervals on NSRs so best to download or buy a workshop manual for it - halfrauds will probably stock the haynes. |
Yeah but the point is we don't think he's looking in the coolant tank, we think he's looking in the two stroke oil tank!
OP:
Something you must know. Two stroke motorcycles run a total loss lubrication system. This means that the engine oil is burned along with the fuel. You will have to keep topping up the tank with two stroke oil regularly. I think the NSR uses a litre for every four or five tanks of fuel or something like that.
If you are running water in the cooling system and the temperature outside gets to -1, you could be in trouble. A frozen coolant system can mean a cracked barrel which means a new one. You can buy pre mixed coolant designed for bikes with alloy radiators from most bike shops.
Thirdly, there is oil in the 'engine' which doesn't get burned but it is exclusively for the gearbox. Worry about that last. ____________________ British beauty: Triumph Street Triple R; Loony stroker: KR1S; Track fun: GSXR750 L1; Commuter Missile: GSX-S1000F; Cheap project: CBR900RR FireBlade

So i got the tanks right, just have to check the water in the system has some antifreezy stuff in it!
I would have thought there was as te bike has been kept outdoors and its been pretty cold lately...
Always best to check tho so the coolant will have a smell wont it...
Will get right onto it
best regards

Hey,
Yeah, cheers.
I have been out on it 3 times today, running out of excuses to go out now :p
Just curious though, i noticed the bike is pretty tame up till around 6k but from 6k + it just Rockets!
The bike littlerally *kicks in* and pulls harder and harder untill i wimp out (i litterally girly out around 8-9k at the moment!).
But yeah, that sound normal atall? The performance difference if night and day either side of 6k, supprisingly so...
Cant wait to do my test and get this un-restricted

Its the 2002 model.
To be honest i do say the bike starts shifting at 6k and just pulls harder and harder but i cannot say i'v revved it up that high, not near the red line yet....
I'm to busy holding on and cr*pping myself to check the revs and back off after a short while.
I have heard the power tails off after 9,000'ish (restricted), might be a while before i can hold it together enough to check haha.
When i say it pulls at 6k, there is a very noticable jolt in acceleration (power valve?!) and it just keeps pulling harder...
i think i need to go find an NSL road soon
