Advise on buying second hand

Hiya all.

I am very new to this forum, I would like some advice please. If this is posted in the wrong forum can some Mod please move this.

I recently had a motorbike stolen it was a Sukida Patriot 125cc some punks took it for a joy ride, sadly the vehicle assessor has stated this is beyond economical repair. As of this I am currently waiting on the insurance company to actually payout.

So I am currently surfing the net looking at Bike Trader and good old Ebay. Are there better places to look for 2nd hand bikes.

I live in the Lancaster area so if you know or would recommend any motorbike dealers that are near enough that would be great.

To be completely honest I am not very mechanical minded at all.

I don't really have the money looking at what I suspect the insurance company to pay out minus the excess I would imagine I am looking around the £500/£525 mark.

I would of done the DAS but I can't afford this at the moment. I appreciate your advice on what to do, where to look etc. I am totally new to this. My only ever motorbike purchase was buying the Sukida which I really did love, I only bought it because I though it looked nice, and was what I could afford at the time.

This is something that I would use to commute between Lancaster and Preston.

Your local free-ads paper is a good place to find cheap bikes.

Ad trader and suchlike.

You need to buy the actual paper the day it comes out and start calling round immediately. All the good buys will be snapped-up on the day the paper comes out. By the time the website is updated, they'll be gone.

Take someone with you who a) Knows a bit about bikes and b) Has no interest in buying one. This should stop you buying a shed.

Thank you for the advice. I really don't want to be buying a shed.

On a side note, has anyone ever used or been to a Police Auction. Or is it Ebay, Auto Trader, Local papers are my friends at this stage?

Inspect the bike before you hand over any money, check things that hang out, such as mirrors, footpegs, exhaust, indicators, handlebar ends for any stratches normally a good hint to if its been dropped/ crashed and if you mention price might come down.

Check the electrics all work on the bike and it ticks over and starts well.

Milage isn't good in massive numbers for a fairly new bike around 2-3years, more wear on the engine parts.

Best to look at the locals and ebay, autotrader is ok but I find it difficult to sell on so maybe not alot of lookers.
