My interpretation of 'assault' has always been causing someone to reasonably feel they are in immediate physical danger.

As I understand it, assault covers everything up to ABH so would cover threatening behaviour of this sort.

It wasnt assault if no contact was made, maybe it was another offence, but not the offence he was accused of.
