The drivel's going to start in a bit, what wonders do you think they'll throw in to try and convince voters to stay with Labour? Or will they put so much shit in place that the Tories will look like the bad guys in a year's time?

Usual BS, fiscal drag (i.e. personal allowances will not increase in line with inflation). i.e. a disguised tax hike.

Beer + cigs up

He is going to say :

Unfortunately for them the price elasticity constraints of everything have hit the buffers, which means that the more they stick the price up the less tax take they will actually get. I think I wrote something in 2008 about this that if you include EVERY single possible benefit you can claim all jobs under 18K were not worth doing.

Oh and I reckon he will make noises about printing money again as nobody wants our bonds.

The only thing I know about the budget is that it is that time of year when some smug cunt will hold up a briefcase and smile the devils smile, knowing that it's contents fall under the heading of "Ways in which to rape you further of your money".

What a load of crap, no real substance, just a lot of wind about giving from the rich to the poor (I'm paraphrasing here).

Oh the government gives a lot to the poor, the non-working poor at least.

While the rich stay rich and the scum stay scum, it seems the working man pays for it all.....

An unsustainable system that will no doubt fail before too long.

No amazing revelations as suspected, he's not going to rock the boat much before an election, problem is he may aswell have as they're stupid if they think they're going to win so what's the point in clinging on anymore.

Regarding giving from the poor to the rich, check out the new feed-in tariffs for people with 20 grand or so to spend on solar or wind power for their homes. They will be paid well over the odds for supplying surplus electricity back to the grid by every energy bill payer in the country so that they can make their money back quickly on their investment. So we'll all be paying even more for electricity so some rich arse can improve his pad and make some savings on his bills and eventually get a nice extra income.

I'm not an expert on power generation but this sounds rather silly.

I think plenty of things benefit from a small scale grass-roots approach for instance houses growing their own vegtables etc etc....

The infrastructure needed for power generation means that it is no good to have a few PV panels here an few PV panel there. When I used to live off grid we had about 3 grands worth of panels, even with our very modest energy consumption (it was low becuase we didn't have it to use), we still had to revert to propane-fired generators very often.

Also PV panels produce DC electricity, perfect if you have a small battery bank/inverter system. Each individual setup will need an inverter to be able to "sell" the surplus power back to the grid. An inverter with the balls to handle the power of £20k's worth of PV array will cost a fortune in its own right.

Never mind the UK isn't exactly sunny happy PV wonderland. On a shitty day even with a £20k array a modern consumer home probably will not even cover it's own usage.

Hi

Ouch, just looked at the figures for the feed in tariff:-

Third Tab Down

A garunteed up to 41p a unit. Bill sat here shows my normal daytime units are 15.96p a unit and night units are 5.19p a unit. So during the day people will be paid 41p for a unit of electric that will be sold on for 15.96p, a loss of ~25p a unit before even taking into account supply costs, billings costs, customer registration costs, etc.

All the best

Keith

My parents are looking forward to feed-in tarriffs.

They have a big house in the country, with oil fired central heating. It costs a hideous amount to run, with heating kerosene over 50p/litre.

With a feed-in tarriff they can get a grant towards a wood-fired boiler, and then get money each year to pay for the wood. They have space to coppice some willow or other fast-growing wood, or they can buy it in.

It'll definately be cheaper than oil, but not as convenient.

When I lived off grid all heating was from woodburners. It definately isn't the easy option if you are going the home grown route. We had 16 acres of woods (some larch/aspen plantations and some mixed decidous), so the wood itself was there. However getting from a tree, to doing the felling, sawing, splitting, drying etc etc... It's a hard way to make fuel from trees. It used to be a family thing, every month or two there would be me, dad, brother and sister attacking a patch of trees and ending up with split logs in big drying racks in the polytunnel. Of course it takes several months to get wood worth burning as it needs to dry properly too, so its hard to get instant fuel.

It wasn't unheard of to be roaming the woods with a wheelbarrow looking for deadfall when times were tight...

The government can afford to make lofty promises re. this feed in tariff because in reality, it'll never happen. It's just a positive soundbite that looks good for the green elements, nothing more.

I wasn't expecting much with an election coming soon. I worry that they'll actually cling on to power though, the tories aren't exactly blowing many skirts up with their chat.

Only thing of note was the tax hike on Cider, the SNP have been championing Minimum Drink Pricing up here (which I think is a load shit, more state control; just what we need.) Labour don't like it either, it seems Darling has dealt the SNP a bit of a slap on behalf of Scottish Labour.

Thumbs Up

The reasoning behind Labours cider tax is pretty obvious; there are lots of cider brewing businesses in the west country which is an area where Labour have very few seats. Rolling Eyes

Bank accounts for all is an equally stupid idea. If someone can't get a bank account then there's a reason why the banks won't let them. If those people have to be allowed to have accounts then that's something the rest of the country will pay for. Rolling Eyes

Freezing tax bands is a subtle way of raising taxes that lots of people don't notice. Rolling Eyes

All sorts of theories about why they want more people to have bank accounts flying around. The main one being, cash is hard to trace, where-as if most transactions are electronic they can be audited and traced more easily.

Not sure I'd sign up to a conspiracy theory, but when you think about all the other laws they've brought in (control orders etc) it does make a sort of sense, well, to them anyway.

Thumbs Up

Was that a joke? It's hard to tell.

Cider is heavily produced in Herefordshire too not just the westcountry, and taxing it more heavily than other drinks doesn't benefit the producers in any way, if anything it may slightly reduce their sales so will have a negative impact. How is that going to win over voters? Or do you mean Labour wanted to punish the non voters Laughing Still, I think Somerset's voting population is unlikely to consist of more than a couple of percent of people in the cider making industry so it's hardly targeting an area.

The tories don't want to win, in that if they win the massive austerity plans will be under their watch and they will be blamed and hated for it, meaning they will be in for one term maximum.

If Labour wins, we'll probably have to go to the IMF (again) which would screw the £ even more and the labour government would only be in for a very short time. But labour as a whole would be consigned to the history books.

It's more sinister than that actually, in that as you increase taxes there is a bigger incentive to cheat, i.e. work cash in hand, in a low tax country if tax is 2% its barely worth cheating the tax man but if it is 50%+ then the incentive to cheat is huge.

In Italy cash in hand is enormous due to the high taxes. In Greece this is off the scale. In Greece it is now illegal to make any transactions over €1500 without going through a bank..

If you move to a cashless society then supposedly taxes are impossible to avoid or dodge. And with such bank accounts under state control they can take taxes out of your account whenever they want, unlike if I had a wad of cash in my pocket.

Cashless society won't work though as people will just use a money substitute, Neuromancer novels suggest that every official transaction is done with credit chips. Everybody just uses old Yen notes as currency instead.

With 40bn (1/3 of the income tax take) being needed to fund interest payments alone taxes are going to keep having to go up and up and up hence the incentive to cheat goes up. Sounds like Feudal Japan with its 150% tax rates tbh (and it is possible!)

I think he means that there isn't much danger of losing votes in that area from this, as they have so few anyway.

More to the point - tax on landlines? Get to fuck. Mad

Farmers would be smart and hide their harvests...

Local warlords would have the right (though right is a loosely used term as if somebody threatens to kill you) to demand free labour from the peasants to build castles and infrastructure at any time. Also to take the sons of families to use as Ashigaru, which were completely expendable footsoldiers. Daughters would be indentured servants of officials.

Thats not the worst of it, the 50p tax is subject to VAT so you'll pay 17.5% VAT on it = 8.7p.

I.e. you are paying a tax on a tax!.

Although there is no good or service offered in the strict definitions of VAT law.

Whether this is true or not (and there may be a grain of truth in it), they are doing a pretty fucking awesome job of running a shit campaign.

If I was forced to make a bet, I would say that Labour will still have the largest number of seats on May7th.
