Does anyone use any sort of additional security for the garage door? I have been looking at the garage door defenders, but the reviews seem to be more bad then good, saying it advertises the fact you have something worth knicking.

Also ground anchor chains - do you just run the chain through the wheels? If so, wouldn't a thief just remove the wheels and nick the rest?

My dads old next door neighbour had minimal protection on his garage, somebody broke in and stole his bike.

The insurance paid out and he bought a nice new bike and plenty of garage security including looks on both sides of the garage door and IIRC two garage defender type things, a month or two later his nice new bike was also stolen.

This was in corbets tey/upminster which is a pretty decent area.

If they want it they will take it.

Not much help but I thought i'd let you know

@c_dug: Unfortunately I think you are right in saying if they want it they will take it.

Think I might have to get some cctv!

we park our car right up-against our garage + bolts & lock on the door + both bikes are chained together + bike is alarmed & imobilised + they would have to move a load of junk to get the bikes out of the garage + i have a dog!

the keys are hidden in the house away from the front door

hopefuly that is enough to keep most toe-rags at bay

a fat chain is always a good thing Smile

For up and over garage doors I'd recommend fitting bolts on the inside that go through the frame near the bottom.

Otherwise there are doors that have an X type lock/bars that go into the frame giving a more secure fit rather than the single top latch.

Add to that some internal PIR and the (in)famous trick of using a baby monitor so you can hear stuff in the garage.

Just some thoughts.

We have one of those electric garages doors that rolls up at the top when open, and locks itself down when closed, so you can pull it upwards, you'd have to do through it. Each of the shutter things is made from some kinda of metal too.

Also have a fake cctv camera mounted ontop of the garage, looks real, but theres nothing inside it. Razz

Agreed. This is what I've done as well as the car being parked right up to it.

Or garage has 2 bars that when you turn the handle to lock it it puts them into a space on the frame to stop into opening we drop another bar though to stop in opening as a sort of dead bolt, short of cutting through the door and can't see how they would get in.

See the pic of the inside the yellow bars are turned by the handle and the blue bar is the one we drop in.

I've got a couple of these:

https://www.saundersonsecurity.co.uk/acatalog/Autolok_Stoppa_Garage_Door_Lock.html

Extra security, stops the door being levered open, but much more discrete than a garage defender. I've also got three gate type bolts on the outside of the door that slide into the doorframe with a padlock on each. Its a compromise between subtle and strong.

I did but one of them broke after a few years, so now I'm down to 1.

Also, not really so applicable to motorbikes, but the_godfather off 'ere 's garage door was done up like a fortress, pretty impossible to break in through the front with the amount of security on it, some scumbag just jumped over the top and broke in via the back door and stole his bicycle.

Obviously you would struggle to get a motorbike back over the top of the garage.

I don't have a garage just a yard with a garage door. It has one bolt on the inside and thats it. If they want the bike they could just jump over, get the bike and open the garage door. I need a ground anchor, some proper garage door locks and some smashed glass on the wall above it.

Hence why my bike is still parked at my mothers in the outhouse, plus it's still broken. I like the autolok stoppa though.

I have something very similar to Chris-red, so if they somehow manage to get past the lock it'll still prevent the door opening. With a few determined kicks they'd possibly bend the door in such a way as to get past this too, but that much determination means they'll find a way to get in anyway.

It certainly kept me out when I tried to get in from outside and forget it was there, undid the lock but couldn't get the door to move more than a centimetre!

I don't want to burst your bubble, but i've seen those types of doors bent up from the bottom right/left which gave access for the scrotes to havitaway with 2 bikes, imo those are the worst type of garrage door to have.

I read in a security article a security "expert" saying the most expensive cctv set up can easily be defeated by the thieves because they just wear balaclava type masks to cover their identity. So he reckoned cctv isn't as effective a deterent as some people believe.

I've got two gate type bolts which slide into the door frame on each corner of the garage door with padlocks on. Easy to cut off with a bolt cropper but better than nothing to deter less serious thieves and less obvious than the expensive door defender.

Except they leave the entirety of the lock open to attack, and a huge big fat gap to get a scaffolding pole into to buckle and rip it up.

Something like this is far more secure with the lock largely under additional metal and little space to jam something in.

the garage door may not be the weakest point, some garage roofs are shockingly poor in design, a 10yr old could pull up the corner of most. A basic alarm with sensors or micro switches stuck to the most vunerable points. Having a garage next to the home with mains power can increase your options, including installing a cheap IP camera. As pointed out by the OP having fancy security measure fitted to the outside of the garage only advertises the fact something expensive is inside. But having good security fitted to the inside, & chains etc is more discreet

It does attract attention, although personally I feel its a case of when they come rather than if without anything substancial to secure the door. The majority of garage doors are going to get tryed sooner or later if theyre in a garage-block particularly. Chains obviously help but once they're inside and can close the door down behind them getting a grinder or similar onto it won't be all that noisey unless its located really near to a house.

I've set up battery powered PIR alarms in mine now as I haven't got a mains supply like I used to have. Tested them out a bit and they seem fairly decent, and relatively hard to get to without a ladder or long pole if they're mounted in a raised-roof style garage above the rafters Thumbs Up

Cost under 20 quid, only thing that may be a problem is the battery life as I haven't tested it for a long period yet and its relying on wireless remotes for activating/disabling it due to the height.
