Chap riding a ZX9R highslides and takes out another rider as found here

I only casually frequent the above forum these days, my computer interest days are over, but still have the odd interesting thread pop up such as this one in their motor section!!

Here are the pics:

I'm glad I never saw that before I did a track day.

I quite like the bit where you can see the owner of the white bike watching it slide along in flames.

Well that sucks.

I've always wondered in these events... what actually happens with the bikes? As in who pays for them? Obviously if you crash and damage only your bike you pay for that... but if you make someone else crash through your crashing and damage theirs.... what is the etiquette?

well reading the thread on the forum i noticed this, the rider of the white bike makes a post saying the zx9r rider accepted responsibility and will be paying for the damage to his bike out of his own pocket, as most people do not have track day insurance.

So despite his brusies and injuries, his bike should be ok

Not sure how the zx9r rider was after that

Fair Thumbs Up

Thought it'd be something like that.

Just not sure if most people would take the "it's a trackday mate, ya know, shit happens" type attitude.

Wouldn't want it done to me so won't do it to others Thumbs Up

Wow, to do that you have to really get it wrong, I've seen superbikes get that wrong and not do that much damage.

It wouldnt have been a highside, not in the usual sense as he would have been on the brakes, I can only assume he was going WAY to fast, lost the rear with it gripping again, dosn't normally happen but it must have been going some and got it spectaculary wrong.

How crap is that, that the fuel tank and or a vital engine component didn't survive the impact or sliding against the floor and let fuel leak out and burn like that. Not that I know how fast it was going or anything.

Very unlucky I suppose Sad

Ouch! In about the 11th pic it looks like the guy in blue leathers twists his back pretty badly.

I once took someone out (while racing) by landing a stoppy crossed up - I braked a bit too hard while still in the corner and rather than sliding it gripped, as I put it down the rear was at rather the wrong angle.
I didn't feel quite so bad as apparently earlier that weekend the same rider had caused Jon to crash; and at a previous weekend Jon had caused me to crash Smile.

There's nothing that says you have to compensate anyone for damage you do at a trackday, but it's nice if you do when it's obviously your 'fault'.

Yep poor bastard, just been taken off and then watching your bike go up in flames..

I'd be pretty pissed. Does make me think of taking something other than the RR to a trackday.

alexio, in the above thread the rider of the white bike also mentioned his engine cover wore through and it was infact hot engine oil burning that was on fire!

Best keep it off the road too, loads of dodgy drivers/riders there too! Wink

I have only once had a coming together with another bike on a trackday – ironically at that same corner, though mine was midway through the latter part of corner.
I thought I’d just taken it a bit too fast – had both wheels slide, but managed to save it, partly due to knee on the deck. On the next lap there was a bike and rider looking sorry for themselves on the floor.

From people watching it seems he basically ran over my rear tyre.
Actually went to see him after and he’d done something nasty to his shoulder – didn’t mention it was me and he blamed ‘the other rider for their odd lines’.
Pretty sure my line was about normal and more to the point, in every briefing them make it clear that both you should give other riders room and that it’s the person behind’s prerogative to overtake safely – he was on a 1000 against my knackered hire r6, so could have easily got me on the straight.
Didn’t bother to say anything more as he didn’t seem to be the type to learn lessons.

Cant really argue with that Laughing

But I'm more worried about myself causing probs like that by braking far too early, so not really someone elses kludge but mine instead.

Guess it depends how fast novice groups go?

Especially in a novice group, people shouldn’t be up your backside braking. Generally suggest people give everyone a decent amount of space and there’s generally a wide range of abilities. Just make sure you only get a bit faster/brake a little at a time etc and you should be fine (suspect the rider above suddenly tried to brake a lot later).
Even racing it’s often not a great idea – I would often snick in behind people if they’re on the right line, but it’s often best to be a bit to one side so if they do brake that bit too early or take a wider line, it’s easier to capatlise on it and take a place.

Slightly off topic, but...

I remember reading of a court case where a bloke tried to claim for damage after someone crashed into him on a trackday and the court basically said "No, it's a trackday, you knew the risk and should have had insurance against it."

Which is probably fair enough, IMO.

If an accident happened on a trackday and I hit someone I wouldn't expect to have to pay for the damage. I'd have insurance; so should they.

Obviously if I was riding like an utter cock I'd feel a bit more guilty, but if it was a plain and simple accident, no way.

(FYI most track day policies only cover your bike/car, not any third party's).

Agree with that, i suspect going out and trying to replicate Rossi on the first session would result in an early end to the day.

Well I'll be damned, I was at that track day last year, it was my first trackday in May last year and remember that crash cos they left a massive oil spill straight across that chicane Evil or Very Mad I was bricking it every time I approached and crossed it.

Both chaps were fine and the Kawasaki carried on in the later sessions I believe. There were no fisty cuffs as both were on the ground a little stunned to what just happened.

Cool GIF though. Thumbs Up

It is good if the bloke that caused it was kind enough to cough up Thumbs Up

I wouldn't have
and I wouldn't EXPECT someone else to either!!

If it was a blatant f-up by me, I WOULD go and apologise and check they were ok though!

If it was the same bike as mine and I had the spares in my van to get them back out on track, I'd do what I can as a gesture. However, that is as far as it would go and that is only if it was blatantly 100% my feck up (and that is only if they didn't get 'in my face' about the incident ... if they did that - they would get NOTHING from me ... not even a (sincere) apology!).

Nice pics, but check out the first couple of shots.

That looks like a real Yamaha R7. (Akra race can, ohlins forks give it away rather than just a track R1 with fairings sprayed in the R7 scheme.)

Sub zero cool. Cool
