So off I go for my longest trip away on a bike! Iv booked camp sites from the 9th May right upto 26th May all along the south! This is the 1st part of my trip :-

https://maps.google.co.uk/maps?f=d&source=s_d&saddr=Basingstoke,+Hampshire&daddr=A285%2FSt+Pancras+to:A285+to:Brighton,+United+Kingdom+to:ditchling+to:Peacehaven+to:Lewes+to:Eastbourne&geocode=FfwzDgMdiHXv_ylTWaCAwQR0SDEqcLluIcctaA%3BFRy7BwMd6EH0_w%3BFRwQCAMd9Pj0_w%3BFcJxBwMdHOv9_ynZT2MGdoV1SDG2j3m2CqTllg%3BFSH-CAMd9z_-_ylJTbSI9Yt1SDFRAJLMrYprig%3BFUIRBwMdQfP__ynNA5DQdn3fRzE18lz9jCJhLQ%3BFe1MCAMdwkUAACmnHKymJWDfRzEkef7er0zX1Q%3B&hl=en&mra=ls&via=1,2&sll=51.024985,-0.513611&sspn=0.844776,2.113495&ie=UTF8&ll=51.014619,-0.399628&spn=0.844964,2.113495&z=10

I cant wait to hit the road. This has been planned for since last year and its getting so close. Iv got all my gear ready to go. Gave my bike a big service just to make sure my little XR dont let me down!

Any anyone around the route wants to meet up for a coke or something on any of the days im on that route (sunday 9th May - friday 14th may) let me know would be cool to meet some BCF members on the way!

I will keep this updated as much as i can before i go! SmileSmileSmile

125 touring always interests me or any smaller bike touring for that matter.
when you get back, tell us what kit you took, how did the bike cope being loaded up, what problems you came across, what sites were friendly and what sites were`nt, ect ect.

plus lots of photos and any tips.... oh yer... good luck Smile

I did just over 300 miles on Saturday on my aged RXS100. It half cripples me these days Laughing Back when I was young and foolish I once covered 519 miles in a day on the same bike. Not something I'd recommend Shocked

I'm 41 and the bike is 24. I've only had it for 20 of those 24 years though Laughing

Cool - this is a good visit (about 1 minute from Arundel) loads of bikers at the weekend - maybe a few during the week:

https://maps.google.co.uk/maps?f=q&source=s_q&hl=en&geocode=&q=Bury+Hill+Arundel&sll=53.800651,-4.064941&sspn=18.98626,39.418945&ie=UTF8&hq=&hnear=Bury+Hill,+Bury,+West+Sussex+RH20+1,+United+Kingdom&ll=50.888633,-0.576664&spn=0.002467,0.004812&t=h&z=18

Or their forum https://www.buryhillbikers.com/forum/

Arundel is a great town to look around too - by the river is nice.

Funnily enough, the weekend of 14th May, I will be leaving West Sussex and heading towards Peterborough for a rally. Hope to be meeting up with a few others up there too. Thumbs Up

By the way, for a more interesting ride, you may want to leave the A27 alone and head up to the A272 (one of the best biking roads in the area)...and also go across from Brighton to Eastbourne via Seaford, lovely bit of coastal road there. Cool

Loaded up my bike up with everything I am taking on sunday to test how the bike is going to deal with the extra weight. Went for a 10 mile ride and it seemed to handle quite well. its strange because the top end speed has not changed but getting to the top end takes a while longer.

Well Im back from my tour of the south east. My god does my body ache as I did 100 miles home non stop to get home last night.

right touring on a 125! Things to remember when touring on a 125! Weight is EVERYTHING! I loaded my bike up with an extra 22KG and 16 KG of that was on the back and you really notice the weight all the way when travelling on the bike! The extra weight knocked off about 5/10mph from my top speed so places where i would be doing 60mph with the extra weight im doing 50mph/55mph. So next time i go on a tour/long trip Im going to cut even more of my stuff down as I think.

The VERY strange thing I found with my XR is that loaded up my MPG got better! On the way down to Brighton loaded up i got around 89mpg lol

Also I did notice my bike burnt a little bit of oil on the way down to the camp site but I think this was due to it being a hot day and i got stuck behind a few slow buses/lorries going up some very steep hills.

I cannot rate the XR any more highly then I do right now! It held its own without missing a single beat on the whole tour! The only problem i had with my bike was that where I strapped my tank bag onto my tank, I put the strap under my fuel pipe and the strap cut into my fuel pipe making me need to replace it!

I truly would now go anywhere on an XR as its really proven itself to me.

Camping is hard work! I don't care what anyone says but it really is hard work camping in the cold! At some points it got down to -1 at the camp site! Waking up at 2am freezing cold is not fun. I had a £40 light weight -20 sleeping bag and I still freezed my butt off every night,

I found it very hard sleeping in a tent so that meant I spent most of the week tired!

Cooking by camp fire is one of the nicest feeling you can have while touring. I kept things simple and just cooked soups but there is just something about cooking by camp fire which I just cannot explain!

I met so many nice people while on my travels, mainly at the camp site. On my last night a few of the people I met there including the owners made me a really big camp fire in the middle of the camp site, cooked me dinner and brought me a few cans of coke as I dont drink! How nice is that?

People really tend to warm to you when you tell them you are travelling on a bike. As soon as you say "yeah Im just travelling around on my bike taking in the sights" people just tend to be really impressed and want to know where you have been and what you are upto. I really enjoyed that part of the trip Smile

I went to so many different places to name a few I ended up at Seaford, EastBourne, Bex Hill, Hastings..

keep away from Hastings!! on the way home a white van nearly knocked me off my bike! Pulled into my lane knocking me into the side of the road! hit my right shoulder and didnt even stop!

I had to take 30 mins time out after that. I was shaking for ages! nearly pissed myself lol

To round things off I have to say it was a trip of my life time. I dont want to over play things but I had so much fun on this trip meeting new people and thinking " I wonder where this leads" and going for it! There is no problem touring on your own as you will always meet people on the way! I met some truly lovely people on the way and I did not really want to come home!

I did around 600 miles which cost me just £35/40ish in fuel which cant be bad can it!

Hope you enjoyed this little write up. I was going to do a Day by Day listing but the days kind of just blur into one towards the end!

thanks mate, was hard work but wroth it!!! dont ever let anyone tell you 125's are not meant for touring! im 100% sure that the XR could handle any amount of miles you put its way! (as long as you keep it topped up with oil Wink )

I love the fact with the XR you can see a path and think "where's that go?" head down it and know you can always get yourself out of trouble as the bike is so light Smile
