Right im after a mountain bike , generally to help me get abit fitter as i cant stand jogging,

I was looking at something like this

https://www.sunsetmtb.co.uk/shop/index.php?product_id=1482&category_id=10

the only reason i like this is because it has hydraulic brakes Very Happy and its under 500

Anyone got any hints/tips as to what to look for when buying?

Try looking for 2009 models, generally just different colours and a whole lot cheaper. Try before you buy. Find a local shop and give bikes a go to make sure they fit you.

Why do you specifically want a mountain bike? Planning a lot of off road? Have you considered a hybrid? Much lighter and better gearing.

I'm waiting for this to turn up, https://www.tredz.co.uk/.Bianchi-Camaleonte-2-Alu-Deore-Alivio-Disc-2010-Hybrid-Sports-Bike_30182.htm. I must of tried 30 bikes before I finally made my mind up.

I've got an older/higher spec GT Avalanche and been very happy with it - generally GT seems to make decent enough bikes - only really cheap ones I'd question.

I would at least consider second hand unless you're on a 'ride to work' scheme or similar.
This seems to be a good site for second hand bikes: https://www.pinkbike.com/buysell/list/?region=5&category=1 .

basically the only thing you should be looking at with mt bikes is the componentry , derailers, shifters ect, you'd be better off with a 10 year old bike that has good gear than a new bike that has shit components,

GT Avalanche was/is the best combination of price and components within that price bracket (when I got mine at least).

Out of interest what size frame do you ride as I may be selling my (barely used) avalanche expert (higher spec than the one shown)?
