Hey everyone,

Went out on the bike today to get some bog roll, and thought, "why not go for a little ride, i havent been out for a while" So i did. About 10 miles into my journey my clutch cable half snapped Shocked With only half hanging on i didn't think it'd last much longer so i was trying to keep its usage down to a minimum, unfortunaltly the road was full of mums doing the school run so it was hard to keep on moving without using the clutch. It really is quite un-nerving not being able to use the clutch when you approach junctions/roundabouts etc Sad

As you can probably tell, i made it back so i didn't die trying to get back Laughing

So, lets hear your stories Very Happy

Rob Thumbs Up

I do believe the user Svenaglie on here (and on Youtube) has an entire video dedicated to riding without a clutch. Thumbs Up.

I've never had to ride without a clutch myself, consider myself lucky! Laughing.

Due to a combination of a lacklusture approach to customer service from a dealership and general ineptitude on the behalf of the post office. I once landed up riding my GPZ500 round Edinburgh (14 mile commute there and back, mostly in town) for a fortnight with no clutch.

I then got two clutch cables in the same post (the one I'd ordered two weeks previously and the one I'd ordered the day before from a different dealers).

That second clutch cable sat in my stuff for 12 years. It's moved house 3 times.

I finally used it last weekend. It turns out it also fits a CB500S. Not identical to the Honda one but close enough.

I once rode 75 miles with no clutch or gearchange, and the flywheel exposed. Third gear all the way. It's surprising how long you can go without stopping when you really put your mind to it Laughing

Hi

Never ridden that far without the clutch. Couple of miles on Charlottes Aprilia AF1 once. And rode the RS125 about 30 miles with minimal use of the clutch (couple of strands remaining, so only used it it I had to).

Rode about 100 mile on a 125 2 stroke in 4th gear once (picked it up and it had no gearchange lever). It was a peaky bike (power started at 9500rpm) which made moving off a nightmare.

All the best

Keith

20 miles through south London at 7 o'clock on a friday night. It wasn't fun. The A23 has many, many sets of traffic lights.

About 18 miles each way including through Leeds city center to get to work and home....

Its all about forward planning to make sure you have to stop as few times as possible.

You do get some funny looks when you thumb the starter away from lights....

No need for a clutch cable on a motorbike in Edinburgh now-a-days anyway.
They do not allow motorbikes to park-up in their city. The plicks. Very Happy

About 6 miles, but that was enough.

CBR600 cable snapped as I was accelerating along slip road to join the A40 heading out of London from the Polish War Memorial junction. Turned around at Hillingdon and headed back to Greenford. Clutchless changes kept me moving with traffic, but stopping and starting was no fun.

for about 2 weeks.

At the same time I also had a molegrip as a gear lever .... and another set of grips as a throttle.

From Burton on Trent on the A50 to Maidstone services on the M20 about 180 miles, on a Friday afternoon before a Whitsun bank holiday Monday in 2007, with traffic jams all the way down the M1 and all round the M25.

I was a little bit stressed by the time we got to the services, our secretary at work, rang a Bike Shop in Maidstone to get a new cable ready when me mate went to pick it up, we fitted it at Maidstone services, then fitted it properly with the tank off etc on the train under the English Channel, then got told that we couldnt strip the bike down when we were putting it back together.

Its a trip i will never forget, i was so far into "the zone" while filtering i left me mate who is normally mustard, he said he could keep up with me, but not for long, concentrating that hard was too much like hard work on the first day of your 15 day bike holiday.

Of course I carry a cable repair kit under my seat these days. Contains a selection of inner cables and detachable nipples in a small tin (size of an airgun pellet tin). You can buy them from Heine Gericke

Although since the VFR has a hydraulic clutch, it's more for if my throttle cable pings.

45 minutes during the BMF moped enduro, made the snarl ups at the tractor tyre chicanes interesting.

Once had the throttle cable snap on my FJ1200 on the A13 at Barking. I swapped the push/pull cables over and rode the 50 miles home with a back to front throttle action. Easy until you have to change gear and you rev the bollocks off it instead of shutting the throttle.

My first roadbike was a Suzuki A100, I rode it after both the clutch and throttle cable snapped. The end of the clutch cable I had tied off under the tank behind the headstock somewhere, I could pull it to get going in 1st then it was clutchless changes all the way. The throttle cable taped the outer cable to something, probably the headlight mount, then I put a large washer onto the inner cable and put my thumb through it. Rode it for perhaps 2 weeks like that.

What do you do when you reach traffic lights? Do you just creep up slowly and hope they change?

And Stinkwheel, how on earth did you last 2 weeks with no clutch???

I wouldn't call the RAC for a snapped clutch cable, although i would if i was half way doing a long journey mind.
Today was actually the first time i've changed through the gears without the clutch. It was actually alot easier to do than i thought, i was making sure that the revs wouldn't get too high as i changed down though.

To stop, bang the back brake on and let it stall, find neutral. To start off, leg it forward as fast as you can, bang it into second and press the starter button as soon as you select the gear. Worked for me, became quite adept at it by the time i got to the Dartford crossing.

I've done 2 weeks without a clutch on my old XJ600 divvy when the thrust bearing in the clutch decided it'd had enough. I had no idea what it was and needed the bike every day for work so I just had to majorly plan ahead and creep up to junctions. I would drag the brakes and try and keep the revs up to stop it from stalling if I needed more time at junctions or if I was at traffic lights or something and I seemed to manage OK and I got to be an expert at bump starting it.

I eventually fixed the clutch problem by buying a new bike Laughing Seemed to sort the problem right out!

All about forward planning.

As you see somewhere you might have to stop approaching, snick it into neutral and coast. If it gets moving again, you just click back into second and away you go. If you have to stop then start again, you paddle the bike along with your feet and knock it into first once it's rolling.

Not as hard as it sounds once you gety some practice in.

Well, I've done 80 miles without any friction brakes before. Without a clutch.... half a mile across town to get home. However, my clutch cable has frozen open before while riding in sub zero temps which is effectively the same thing. Again, just half a mile across town.
