Honda's 2t V3
Honda's CBX1100, although realistically it wasnt that special.
Honda's 4t V4 Gear-driven cam engines.

I don't think much else competes with them but it'd fall down to personal opinion.

Surprisingly i'm not much of a Honda fan!

Best for what though?
Sound, excitement, efficiency?

Be very suprised if many BCF'ers can name a single best bike engine of all time? I think you need to quantify your question a bit more!

Best for what?

Of the bikes I own:
For fun, I really like my KTM200EXC, but would love to try a 150SX.
For flexibility and usability my GSXR1000K6 does pretty well, but I reckon would be easily beaten by the S1000RR.
For climbing up very steep things, I haven't found anything close to my Rev 3 - but most newer trials bike are likely to be better.

Also, you didn't specify bike engine, so I'm going to say...

The 2.6 litre straight 6 out of a Vauxhall Carlton.

Haha yeah. I'm loving some of the appropriate/inappropriate ads that are popping up there lately.

I'm stuck between the Honda horizontal semi-auto (C50, C90 etc), or the CG125 engine.

I'll go for the C70 for its combination of bombproof reliability and design exceeding performance.

I personally have a lot of respect of the HRD Black shadow engine because it sounds as good as it looks and is as fast as it sounds. It was way ahead of its time.

I also like the RC166 engine. Because the concept is just madness and the engineering is more akin to making a watch than a motorcycle. When someone recently went to make a replica, they had to borrow an engine from a museum and x-ray it to see where the hell they'd put the oilways.

I've fallen inlove with aircooled boxers, mainly down to the ease of servicing.

I replaced the top ends on my R80 motor (turning it into an R100), adjusted the valves and had it running again inside of an hour, with the engine still in the frame.

Its clearly the RD350YPVS. The LC is good but the powervalves make it into a truly exceptional engine.

If I had to choose a four stroke then it would have to be something pretty special, I'd have to say the KTM 990 V twin for its combination of light weight and stupid power. Anybody can make a heavy powerful engine, but not many people can make a light and powerful V twin.

How long is piece of string, it depends what you need from the engine as many have said. I'm happy to have one that needs minimal maintenance, does decent mpg and doesn't mean I'm stuck for power in normal traffic situations. My XJ600 is fine, 60 bhp is enough for what I need, even the old CB250 which doesn't make as much power as it used to does for most things but then I am not obsessed by power.
