I have recently bought a Kawasaki Z250 and im in the process of cleaning up until pay-day so i can get some bits done/ paint.

Anyways, the engine casing looks as if it could benefit with a clean, it isnt covered in oil it is just 30 years old. Is there any particular products that can be used to make it look a bit better? Any help would be great.

I remember recently, a member of BCF used some Halfrauds high temperature paint to renovate the engine casings on a CBR...
...assuming you'd want to go down that route ?!

If it's a Z250 then the engine's painted so you'll have to paint strip it first to remove the old paint & then clean it thoroughly before you respray it. The best finish that I've used for bike engines is two pack poly as it's very durable & easy to clean.
Have fun!

You could try t-cutting it if it's painted.

Hamerite Nitromors and a green/black scouring pad.
Nitromors 1st.
Let it work into the old paint. (It only takes about 20 secs).
Give it another dose of Nitromors if not completely clean.
Wash wel with soap and water.
Use thinners/petrol to wash the engine and remove any remaining oil grease.

Rub down any flaws scratches with wet and dry.

If any deep scores or gouges these will need more intensive work.
Or it may be easier to fill using a metalbased epoxy filler or JB Weld before final rubbing down.

When you are happy with surface preparation spray using a good quality primer. Let this dry and re-work the surface to remove any flaws that always seem to show up better with a coating of primer.

2nd coat of primer and allow to tack dry.
3rd coat of primer and allow to tack dry.

Final coat of alluminimumum/Silver paint tack dry

Final top coat of clear protective laquer for a show finish.

The only problem with doing this to the engine is that the rest of the un-fettled metal on the machine will then suddenly stand out and look like SH1TE... Crying or Very sad

I chap I know who paints exotic cars advised that bike painting needs to be done carefully. People don't look at the fine detail on cars due to proportions but bike seem to get looked at under the microscope. I wanted touch up he advised total re-spray. I agreed with his advice as the bike look like new after the respray where as it looked poorly patched when touched up before.

But if just a tidy up then fair doos.

How good do you want this Z250 to look? If you want concourse standard then use wallopers method. If you just want a clean bike to ride around on then get a decent degreaser on it and then some soapy water. Thumbs Up
