Usually a cheque or bank transfer, don't expect many if any would pay in actual money.
I would sell private though, to get best possible price

Have a look on ebay for an idea of private sale prices and compare with the quote a garage has given you - youmight then decide it is worth the hassle!

I don't think so. Selling private isn't that much hassle. Doesn't take long to put an add up, and sorting out the v5 takes 5 minutes.

It's worth if for the (possibly) hundreds of £ more you will get for selling private.

Forgot to add: When selling my r125 the garage offered me almost £400 less than what I ended up selling it for.

Sorry for maybe a silly question. Is it safe to be paid by cheque when selling a bike to a garage?

No.

Put it on eBay at a realistic price - £100 compared to the rest, this will probably be the same the garage will be offering you if not more. Buy it now. Put lots of detail up. It gets bought and someone pays cash.

I can see the hassle.

When we came home from Oz I sold my scooter to a main dealer and got cash, the wife got a cheque for the car.

It's a dealer, dont worry, and no you don't keep the bike until the cheque clears.
