If we're talking the full track probably the bike as the F1 car will struggle for grip as it's too bumpy. On the short track that's used for racing F1 car hands down.

I would lean towards the car winning as there are too many bends for the car to get an advantage.

F1 car whatever, I'm pretty sure regardless of bumpyness.

Bikes just aren't great on the Nurburgring compared to cars with reasonable downforce. Current production car lap record holder is the SR8LM. According to the ever-reliable wikipedia the Radical was lapping around 30 seconds quicker than the best bike time, despite being timed on a distance that's over a mile longer (about 10% longer I think).

Top gear reported that the new Ferrari road car. Was actually faster round the track that the F1 lap record....

Then added that the track is now shorter Laughing

I would expect a F1 car to beat even the Moto Gp bikes in a like for like race.
So unless the F1 car is being driven by someone like Richard Hammond, then its a no brainer.....

Do you mean F1 McLaren (Jenson Button's F1 car) or McLaren F1 (1990's supercar)?

Wiki page: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/N%C3%BCrburgring_lap_times
Note it has some general information about a BMW F1 car being taken around.

In almost all situations a F1 car will easily beat a moto-gp bike - take a narrow twisty circuit with a fair number of slower sections and the bike may start to have the advantage due to the lines it can take. You could design a section that would be a straight line for a bike, but a constant weave for a car.
Faster sections and the car's massive downforce can give it a lot better cornering and late braking.

Hi

Assuming you mean McLaren F1 road car and a 600cc road bike with roughly equivalent driver and rider, then I doubt the bike would see which way the car went.

Looking at the link G posted, best lap time for a bike is 7m 17s for a heavily tweaked GSXR600. About the same as a Porsche GT2 manages on a 1.5 mile longer version of the same track.

All the best

Keith

to be fair that gsxr wasn't all that tweaked,
irc its the gixxer from fast bikes project super-light
(the company build and sell them for the right £££)
it had a tri force full system, 750 throttle bodies
(which caused a lack of low to midrange)
a pc3, some carbon body work and wheels, lighter battery and bitubo suspenders
it was still road legal with signals, lights and plate, and burden by substantials traffic

im not the biggest sbk viewer but correct me if im wrong the above bike couldn't run with the WSS pack?

i think a good spec thou would be fair competition, but either way the car would probably still take it.

f1 cars are quicker then gp bike round a track so thats a no brainier vs a 600.

but the road car vs a 1000 could be close

like mentioned above top gear claim the new Ferrari has the track record now,

could a WSB spec thou with rider challenge a super car? Thinking

What Ferrari Confused - the 599xx? Not road legal and still doesn't come that close to the SR8LM which is a road legal car you can buy. Don't think it's got any 'record' accept in Ferraris marketing department Smile.

I very much doubt any bike can get near those kind of times over that circuit due to the physics of a bike cornering and braking into corners versus a car with lots of downforce.
The power to weight of the Radical with driver is going to be similar to the power to weight of a BMW S1000RR with rider, yet it has a lot better aerodynamics(I presume)/down force.

Fair point, although by the looks of it the main aim was reduced weight

Comparing it to (standard) thousands (given that the time I mentioned is for a pretty much standard Porsche road car), the next quickest time listed is an MV that was 4 seconds slower, followed by an R1 that ws another 7 seconds slower.

And the cars are using the longer track so have an extra 1600m or so to travel. The only fairly modern one listed for the full circuit is a GSXR1000 managing 7:49

All the best

yeah their aim was more weight reduction then power,
(think they had 120bhp at the wheel and a 153kg wet weight)
and to see if it could lap faster then a thou, which they also tested a along with a stock 600.

but they complained the traffic hindered their times alot and could go a fair bit faster if given a open track.

is it even fair to compare a supercar to 600 supersport generally,

given the price difference and usual use of the car, it seems the car would have a much higher ceiling for development then a bike which is built with the intent to be used daily

forgotten what one it is G, it was on the 1st episode of the current series.

road legal track cars like the radical, atom, etc seem pretty unbeatable by any bike, but bike mag if irc, did a gsxr 1000 vs caterham and the gsxr surprisingly won

It was probably the 599XX - which was what Ferrari marketing BS was going on about a few months ago.
I'd like to see Ultima get a decent crack at it. Think you can now order a GTR with 800hp from the factory.

Not that surprising for a bike mag Wink. The fifth gear Radical vs GSXR1000 test was ok... the radical just won, but they admitted was probably less practical than the sports bikes for doing your shopping with. However the rider was showboating all over the place and could no doubt have done a bit better keeping wheels on the ground and aligned Smile.

Bit I found they were claiming a few seconds faster without traffic. Enough to catch it up a place with the next production car maybe (a 1.8 turbo Donkervoort)

Spit-Fire wrote:

Probably not, but then even the litre bikes are slower that that GSXR, and are only vaguely in the same ball park as the production cars due to having a mile less to travel (even if done at 120mph, enough to knock 30 seconds off the lap time).

Think the opposite applies for the Porsche compared to a prepared GSXR (or indeed given the engine lives most bikes).

All the best

When you look at the performance difference from say a ferrari 360 to a ferrari GP car, the GP car generally has lap times about 75% of that of the road car. As road cars can lap in around 7.3 minutes i would expect a GP car to do it in about 5:15.

Nick heidfeld lapped in about that time when he did a few demo runs there few years back, though they weren't officially timed.
7:45 on an RC30 seems to be the only comparable lap time in the same track layout.

The F1 lap time top gear were talking about it the old F1 lap record from when the race was last held there. The track has been improved since then and tire technology etc has also come on alot.

yeah i expect some bias out come, but its done in conjunction with their sister company which is a car mag, they did a porsche vs a gsxr750 in the wet, car walked away with it,
and a bike vs a remote control car on a drag strip lol,
forgot what won that one

what kind of times do WSB do at the NURBURGRING

Hi

Don't think the ring has been used for real racing since long before WSB came into being.

As to a GSXR1000 vs a Caterham, sounds rather like comparing a Supermoto to a Zonda.

All the best

I just re-watched the news segment of that episode (first of Series 15 at 0:22:22) and it was indeed the Ferrari 599XX in 6:58. Hardly a road car at £1.2m though.

To be honest I think its a non contest. Just look at lap times for somewhere like Catalunya. F1 car is a full 20seconds a lap quicker than a MotoGP bike, thats over a distance of around 4.5km.

Thats a massive difference over just a few miles. And thats an elite bike, not some standard 600.

Take a close look at Silverstones lap times this weekend and compare them to the gp times from a few weeks back.

I know were talking the Nurnburgring here, but it pretty much still applies. The F1 car would trounce the bike.

Its down to cornering speed, downforce, and the massive advantage it would have in the braking zone I reckon. I dont know any facts and figures but I bet a F1 car could do 200 to 0 in less than half the time a gp bike could.

Just my 2 Penny Coin Thumbs Up

More a case that if I remember it had slicks or other not road legal tyres on, don't think it was road registered etc.
While Radical drove their SR8LM over from the UK and put in a 6:48 lap, then drove it home again - Taxed and Tested with road legal tyres.
Not sure how much one would cost, but suspect it'd be a tenth or so the Ferrari.
Not sure it's much more useful a road car - but it's certainly faster!

Didn't Fifth Gear do a back to back drag race of Jenson Button's Honda F1 car, a power boat and a bike, the F1 car made them all look quite shabby (despite a slow start, and it being a Honda F1 car). The power/weight matched up to the mechanical and aerodynamic grip make F1 cars a bit tasty in both a straight line and round a corner.

And they fly if you're Australian.

Yea, but interestingly the WSB bike won when the traction control on the F1 car wasn't working, as it just couldn't control the rear wheel spinning. Further, they were both fairly level when it did work until the downforce came into affect, when the traction control could make maximum use of the power available.

Yes yes there are many variables, its all very complicated etc etc

but id rather trash an 8k gsxr 1000 than a 100,000k supercar that can boast a few extra seconds/ minuets quicker per lap Laughing

Plus im betting the bike is still more fun Very Happy
