What supermoto to get?

Hey,

I've ridden in the past a Kawasaki Versys 650. I got on fine with it but thought it was too heavy and bulky. I'm looking for something a little lighter and more fun that will inspire more confidence.

I landed on supermoto's and although the drz400 looks about right, ideally I'd like something a little lighter and perhaps more powerful.

What are the good alternatives to the DRZ? ktm's/ huskys/ CCM's...?

Are there any supermoto's which are like MX bikes in being very light with powerful (front wheel lifting) type acceleration?

supermoto is tres gay. Get a road bike or an offroad bike. Not a road bike that goes like 60 with a 520cc engine

I thought KTM only make the big supermoto's like 690 and 990?

As I've gone on about before - you can get any two of the following in dirt style bikes:
Lightweight, powerful, reliable.

However, you're not going to get all three, so the properly frisky competition machines have that MX style power and lightweight, but you have nasty service intervals.
Lots of power and reliable, but lose out on weight, etc.

Good alternatives to the DRZ are the Husky TE610 (not 510), lighter KTM LC4 bikes and CCM404. G650 is also worth considerng.

I used to have a Husky 501 which wasn't very 'reliable', with short service intervals. I 'part-exed' it for a 200EXC which is actually a bit more reliable thanks to being a 2 stroke and is even lighter (102kg real no-fuel weight) but

If you want a high maintenance supermoto for road use, I'd go for a late model Husaberg 650 - lots of power, loads of midrange grunt and not much weight. Seen a 2007 model with both sets of wheels up for £2700 recently; glad I didn't have cash, 'cos I'd have been tempted despite having no need/desire for it.
I've got a KTM690 (LC4) and a dead CCM404 (engine died, but it's the DRZ engine, so same worries with the DRZ).

Other light and powerful bikes are the KTM EXC range, Husky TE510 (SM510?) and various other competition bikes people have converted themselves.

I would suggest you do get a decent ride on some appropriate bikes first to get an idea if you do like them and can them with them.

Is your EXC street?
Do KTM make the EXC's in street legal form? Or are they conversion?

Would the lighter and less reliable bikes be suited to day trips around the uk occasionally?

You can buy them road registered from new.

It depends what you mean by 'day trips' - certainly you can go out for a decent blast, but I wouldn't get one to just eat up the miles amblig around the country on.
Also, they're often not made to do sustained high speed stuff - as they're expecting the bike to be jumping up and down, sometimes things can wear excessively if used for prolonged periods on motorways and the like.

Supermoto's are more fun, especially on the roads around me. My ccm 604 was a fun bike and i did 200 miles riding it back motorway and was fine, not even a numb ass
