i have changed the plugs and the battery is quite new and seems to be working well. I get no spark at all when I put the connected plug on the cylinder and use the kick start. I don't know much about mechanics. Any help will be much appreciated

hmm i am trying to remember
it sounds as though it could be fuel if you have a faint spark
also check you have a really clean earth connection the old triumphs need a good connection
nice to hear the old triumph triples still being used.
if not sure about mechanics it may be worth looking up your local branch of the Triumph Owners Club, i am sure you will get lots of help for a beer or two

Sorry this is off topic, have you got any pictures of your bike, my dad's got one of these (currently restoring), it'd be nice to have a look at a similar bike.

Things to check if you have no spark would be the HT leads & the coils.

When you say there's no spark, how are you testing this?

Davo, here are some pics. I think I saw in the chat about your dad's bike having no spark and you fixing it. if you could be more specific on how you did it I would really appreciate it. As I said I am not much of a mechanic but I am very keen to learn these things (hate to take it to the pros).

test for the spark was by putting the connected plug on the metal of the engine and, with the ignition on, pushing the kickstart with the hand.
