If your that worried send it recorded delivery, and or just keep a copy of your driving license number.

I personally had no problem when I had mine changed for a change of address.

Can you use the post office check & send service?

Failing that use Recorded delivery.

Hi again marc_yorks.

I used the Post Office check and send service. You don't have to worry about sending any ID to the DVLA. The Post Office staff verify it and give you it back. They check the form and also take care of the postage for you - they send it in a special bag to DVLA. You also get a receipt for all of the forms, old licence etc.

For four quid you can't go wrong! You shouldn't have to pay for adding a new class to your licence either. My shiny new licence was back in no time too!!

No mate - it's free when you add a category to your licence. I had a paper licence too but it didn't cost a bent meg to get the photocard one! (Only the 4 quid Post Office fee).

When I wanted to add the category to my licence, I was well confused about what to fill in on the form. Confused

I gave the DVLA a call and a nice lady helped me through it and confirmed the no fee too. I still didn't like the idea of sending my passport in though, so still went for the PO option anyway!

It's not always free, depends when you got your provisional.

I have a form around here explaining it, I'll dig it up, photograph it and post it.

Edit: Ta da!

You already own a full licence don't you? (car)

If you already own a full licence it's free, as it states. If all you have is a provisional from 1993, then it's not free.
