Not sure if this has been posted anywhere, but I know there are a few of you out there, who might be very interested in this:

Not sure which night they mean - either 27th or 28th August.

But planet Mars will be the brightest in the night sky starting August. It will look as large as the full moon to the naked eye. This will come to a point on 27th August when Mars comes within 34.65M miles off earth. Be sure to watch the sky on Aug. 27 12:30 am US (probably 05.30 am in the UK). It will look like the earth has 2 moons. The next time Mars may come this close is in 2287.

I think the 34 miles made it quite obvious, if he had said 34,000 miles then it could of been slightly more believable

both earth and mars have slightly elliptical orbits, combined with a difference in orbital frequency means that there are times when mars gets a shit load closer or further away, the variation can be more than twice the distance from the earth to the sun. At the time of closest proximity Mars can be seen very clearly with even a low powered telescope. This is the Perigee. No such even tis scheduled for this year, and no such event will ever result in Mars appearing either larger or brighter than jupiter, and nothing like as bright as the moon.

But how can you physically see more than 50% of it? Saying you can see 60%, or even 51% at any one time is daft, what you're saying is that you can see part of the moon on the 'back' of it

At a time, you can't even see 50% more like 49%.
Visible from earth is 59% as the earth rotates. You see 49% of it from 1 position, but your position on the earth changes as it rotates, so the 49% of it you see shifts as you move round.

If you had the ultimate heat proof suit, could you stand on the surface of the sun?

Well if you look at it that way then true, you could see 60% or whatever. But it was worded badly

As for standing on the sun, if you could have a suit that could resist the immense temperatures then yeah i suppose you could, until you died from the radiation

I mars did get that close, how much of an affect would it have on earth? Would the gravitational pull affect tides, or maybe even change Earths orbit?
