Yesterday I went out fishing with a few friends off Newhaven
my mates boat is a tow boat for wakeboarding etc but as the swell outside the harbour wall
was pretty high (1.5 - 2m) we decided it was to rough to fish out at sea
so we ended up fishing in the protection of the harbour wall

only thing was our tackle was more for real sea fishing, IE rather big hooks & lures
than what I would call inshore fishing tackle so we didn't have any luck (But still had a great day)
its not that we don't know how to fish, problem is I havn't been sea fishing for 20 years
even then we'd be on a charter and using there gear
and I only really do river and Loch fishing for trout etc
the other guys are more into carp fishing or fishing for big game fishing

what I need to know is what tackle is needed for "Inshore sea fishing"
so the next time we go and its too rough we can have a chance of a catch
things like the type & size of hooks, what to use for bait and any other general info
on what to be looking to catch at what time of the day and tide states etc

so any of you guys into sea fishing that can help out it would be appreciated

I love inshore fishing, but not all that massive beechcaster stuff!
i fish from harbour walls, groynes, & estuaries, and i use a mix of some sea tackle and my carp fishing tackle.

works for me Smile

we did have a hand line set up for Mackrel with 6 hooks on it
I did think next trip to take my spinner setup I use for Loch fishing
its set up for trout (4lb line) but I doubt you'd get anything much bigger inside the harbour wall

Even inside the harbour wall, i would feel that 4lb line is a bit light.
i use 10lb line and a 7lb or 6lb hooklength.

there are a lot of surprises lurking in harbours and you would`nt stand a chance with 4lb line.

if 4lb works for you then go for it Thumbs Up

^^ Agreed.
Even for canal pike spin/lure fishing i use minimum 10lb b/s - mostly for pulling out of snags etc, never bother with a wire trace, heavy mono never seems to get bitten through.

I did a spot of harbour fishing up at Whitehaven recently, had good fun with joeys on spinners and monster mullet on bread and bubble float.
Whilst incredibly frustrating at times, i had more fun with the mullet than the mackerel, although mackerel taste nicer. (never eat mullet, i'm told they taste pretty dirty due to them swallowing a fair amount of diesel from the surface)
I was sorely tempted to have a chuck for some sea bass with my (pike) fly rod down near St.Bees & Braystones, but it was incredibly windy most of the time and my fluff-chucking technique is pretty shitty when it comes to distance.

I know 4lb is pretty light bit I've landed some big trout (up to 10lb) with that and trout can put up a good fight

will give the bubble float a shot next time as I'll be taking my own tackle box
will also take my ledger rod which may work for the flatty's normally use 6 lb on that
and I'm thinking about my fly rig, seen them used a lot on fishing programs when there sea fishing

Think the trick will be to chum up for success.

Inside a harbour I would avoid a bubble float and simply use a standard course set up, shouldn't be too many snags etc inside the harbour so would go as light as I dared on the tackle, with a second heavier set up straight to the bottom.

Fly rod is good fun if the mackies are surfacing, but inside a harbour I wouldn't expect too much sport.

The bubble float is really just there as a casting weight when using a lightweight floating bait (in this case bread), it also doubles as a bite indicator if you've chucked out a few free offerings. Can also be used as a bolt rig if you get the right sort of bubble float.

I'll often use them for the 'cheats method' of fly fishing - spin rod, fixed spool reel, bubble float, dry fly or goldhead/leadhead/zonker. Taken some nice Chub out of the canal using this method.
Speaking of 'cheating' with flies, a few large shot or lead olives gives enough casting weight to use dirty great pike flies on a spin rod setup. Taken some nice Pike using this method, i favour an orange Daiwa Bunny Wobbler and a very slow, jerky retrieve - made for some exciting takes right at the end of the retrieve.

Personal pet hate - it's coarse fishing, not course. Sorry, can't help it.
