Hi.

I was wondering what you all thought of the claims scottoiler make about it making C&S last 7 times longer.

Surely if I paraffin + toothbrush and then scottoil + toothbrush every week then my chain will last just as long?

I have owned a scottoiler for two years and it has always ended up clogging up after a month or so. I'm sick of the injector getting ripped off when backing up the bike too. I don't like filling it up and then finding it is no longer running and my chain is dry.

I am very aware of how they work, how to prime them, set the flow rate etc.

It doesn't really make sense to me that a chain would last even twice as much compared to cleaning it and lubing it weekly yourself?

Not only that but you can get the lube right into both sides of the chains without the dual injector kit or any of that nonsense. (I realise the oil gets drawn to both sides with the single injector set up correctly, but still it's a bit of a pain.)

What do you all think?

Thanks guys.

The Scottoiler does lube it all the time though - that's got to be better than once a week.

I thought that with modern sealed chains the joints between the links don't need as much lubrication - the main thing is that the parts that rub against the sprocket teeth are always coated.

I'm prepared to be corrected though.

Tbh, I am sick of scottoiler.

Is anyone planning another lubeman multibuy?

It's got dual injectors and it is so simple to use. Scottoilers are a pain in the arse unless you have one that has been working reliably since being set up.

I'm sold on the simplicity of it.

Ripped the last scottoiler I had off the bike. I hate them. Ive had them on 2 bikes (both on when I bought the bikes) and Ive not liked them.

Both have been primed and set up fine, working normally and then just decided to misbehave. The one on the Hayabusa would be fine one day then the next morning I would open the garage door to find the wretched little shit had pissed its oil out over the floor and my tyre. Personally something thats full of oily stuff and is as reliable as a ginger stepchild on smack is not what I want next to my back tyre.

I honestly couldnt care if it made my chain last 7 times longer and I could trade all the residue left on the sprocket in at the end for a new chain. I hate them and won't be letting one near my bike again! Laughing

I changed my scottoiler from lubing at the rear sprocket to it running just above the rubber chain guard on top of the swinging arm.
Using single point onto the middle of the chain lubes it all over and requires a lower flow rate as well. Thumbs Up

Where a oiler wins is in wet weather as the chain is kept oiled, rater than being washed off.
Add in a chain is best lubed when hot, so after a ride out. Not before....

As reliable as a Ginger stepchild on smack Laughing I haven't laughed so hard since my father in law was translated as having said "you should never work with ginger people, there is a reason they were marked by god" in front of my Ginger sister, the best bit was he was not laughing!

Hi mate.

That's a good tip. I am thinking that maybe my scottoiler keeps blocking up because there may be a leak in my hose letting in air or the terrible way it was routed. I think I might give it a go at routing it so it drips on the same position as yours does as this means I don't need to have a big >270 degree bend back to the rear sprocket. The garage that fitted it for the original owner of my bike made an arse of it imo.

Scottoilers do work, but you have to remember 2 things.

1.) they don't replace good chain maintenance

2.) They need maintenance themselves.

Follow those rules and you'll be right. From a price only point of view I'd rather use a Tutoro or Loobman any day of the week, but you can forget to trigger them of course.

With regard to the original post, I'd say that the primary advantage of a Scottoiler over manual chain maintenance and to a lesser extent Loobman and Tuotoro type chain oilers is that because the Scottoiler constantly oils the chain, the chain is kept clean. If you take a toothbrush and some parrafin to a motorcycle chain every week, all you're doing is rubbing in a special kind of grinding paste with a fine brush. The Scottoiler continually rinses the chain with oil, meaning this grinding paste never has a chance to develop. As far as I'm concerned, the advantage of a scottoiler is not so much that it provides lubrication, more that it keeps the chain clean which is not done by manual lubrication or by 'one squirt' lube devices like the Loobman.

Scottoiler's do work as Marjorie says, by keeping the chain clean with a fresh supply of lube 24/7.

You do however have to be very careful about setting it up correctly in the first place - if you rip it off by backing the bike up then you had it on wrong.

Also, they save fucking around with bikes with unhelpful exhausts (SV1000) that seem to be in the way of the rear sprocket and much of the chain run. I got fucked off with burning myself on it's hot exhausts when manually cleaning the chain - the Scottoiler was well worth the money just for that purpose.

So do eeet, but do it properly. Thumbs Up

I don't miss mine in the slightest, I quite like lubing & cleaning the chain, being non-mechanical it gives me a sense of achievement. Laughing I also don't miss the fling of the oil over the back on the bike, no matter how I had the drip set up. Maybe the new ones are better?

I have done over 7000 miles with a scottoiler on this chain and it has not needed adjusting once so far.
New bike is a shaft drive, so less worries there Laughing
