Land Rover
bought mine for £280 about three years ago, used it pretty much everyday since.
It's been abused and it's still going strong. Good bikes for the money.

Unfortunately you're going to have to be pretty lucky/do a lot of shopping around.
New you've got to find a really good sale to not got general tat.
Secondhand, as above; you'll be hard pressed to find one that doesn't need lots of work.
Mountain bike stuff does wear out pretty quickly and all the little bits easily add up.
For secondhand, look out for people that have bought new a while ago, but never really used it.
AS bit more money, but I got a fairly good deal recently; paid £600 for an £850 Boardman FS Comp - it came with the receipt for £850, dated the day I got it!
He'd got it on the bike to work scheme and presumably wanted the cash (he'd still pay less than that back) - he did want more than that, but that was all I had and waving it under his nose did the job .
Like with cheap motorbikes, I'd say go on condition (and components) rather than brands.
This looks like an ok deal for new, but still above your budget by a bit: https://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Models.aspx?ModelID=42034
Pink bike is worth a look for second hand: https://www.pinkbike.com/buysell/list/?q=&category=2&pmin=&pmax=175®ion=5&countryid=193 .
Something like this maybe, then use the other £75 to sort out any bits it needs: https://www.pinkbike.com/buysell/674139/ . |

I'd say the Cable disc brakes on that Banshee were better than any V's I've ridden - they were also better than the more-used hydraulic discs on the Banshee X I replaced it with when it got nicked (both were second hand, but first was hardly used).
I liked the stock model Banshee with the coil shock; it was good value (£275 second hand a few years ago), the coil meant it was quite plush and it did pretty much everything I needed.
As I say, the Banshee X I got turned out to generally be a bit knackered, so not had a great time with it. Reality is I don't do anything that serious to need a big beefy frame (it's based on an older Kona design, I persume you know) so the Boardman 5" FS crosscountry style I've got suits me much better for most riding.
I've ridden an older (06 or so) Fury a fair bit and it was a decent bike.
If you can find a deal like I did, I'd seriously consider looking at something like the Boardman (lightweight reasonable travel full suspension), I'm a definite convert! - it hardly weighs more than a Fury would, yet you get 120mm of suspension front and rear, but don't lose out a massive amount in pedalling (I've done two 40 mile rides this week, one on road mostly, the other almost all off and it's been fine for both.) Do get a bit more traction going up hill too and you get the front lockout. |
