Hi guys but new here and in a bit of a bind not too sure what to do.

So my GSXR 400 Has been standing for a while after some nut job pulled out in front of me a few years back then drove off !

Decided to get it all fixed up got insurance sent it to the shop to get it all sorted.

Sunk a little over 750 in to it to fix it plus insurance tax etc ( i know possibly stupid but just wanted her back up and running)

Full M.O.T, Service the stinger was the labour (8hours @ 40 quid :’()because the carbs had to be completely stripped and rebuilt plus parts etc and needed a new casing and bought new wing mirrors.

So after a month in the shop me going back and forth for aaages all the tears etc and the happiness of the few hours I got riding there’s still problems!!!

Some electrical fault that they can’t figure out apparently it’s likely to be the cdi unit and not all cylinders fire up at times.
It still rides but the choke has to be on and the idle is up ridiculously high! Not safe riding scariest thing ever driving it back from the shop

I had to stop there didn’t think it was worth sinking any more money in to it.

Now I am stumped what to do! Should I sell after sticking so much in to it do I plough on?
I do also have an aprillia sr50 moped in my back garden so im thinking sell up both and get another bike........ any ideas?

Sad

They cant figure it out....yet its likely to be the cdi unit?

What work did they actually do in 8hours?! I reckon i could completely strip a bike down to the frame in that time!

Im not an employed mechanic, but i would NEVER let a bike i had been working on out of my garage in an unrideable state.

If pulling the choke sorts it I'd say it was running weak on some cylinders.
Air leak, useless garage?

Id go along the lines of the 'rebuilt' carbs.

A torn diaphram could cause issues, incorrectly set pilot screws, torn intake manifolds?

This kinda thing makes my blood boil.

I'd agree, I'd also suggest that you buy a set of gauges and balance the carbs, even if they are are correct the guages will save you money, and garage cock-ups, in the future.

Before you go tearing into the carbs, has it had a new battery? If it has been standing for a few years then the battery could be knackered (will start the bike and seem ok, but has very little capacity left) which can cause all manner of running problems.

After that I would suspect a fuelling problem, a torn diaphragm or inlet rubber, mixture screws set wrong, water in the carbs.

Id take it back to them and tell them it doesnt run right, even after a 'service' by them.

It doesnt take an hour to strip and rebuild a bank of 4 carbs...

Im guessing this isnt a main dealership?

OMG I think its just not meant to be!

MORE bad news
So i took it out for a bit of a ride it broke down had to be towed back home Sad
ON TOP OF THAT The left fork seal must have gone cos its leaking!
So for some reason the ignition fuse keeps blowing and it seems like it something to do with the indicator/ indicator relay its really weird im baffeled!
I did notice that while riding when i switched on the lights all my dials would go nuts! So now i just need to find the electrical fault but no idea how to start!

Arbo i may have to take you up on that now that it wont even start ill get even less for it if i sell!

ZRX61 yea your probably right and it seems they must of rewired it up wrong now that this has happend! i dont get why the indicators would have any connection to the ignition wiring.

Just about everything is wired through the ignition.... Other wise it would work without the ignition turned on.... Embarassed

Could be a poor earth. But without knowing exactly what was done that made the fuse blow its very hard.

If the dash is playing silly buggers when the main lights are turned on it could be that the battery is knakered, and it's not got enough power from the charging system to work the lights, dash and try to charge the battery. O just thought maybe reg/rec is knakered and overloading the ignition circuit ergo blowing the fuse.

Op, to check for leakage in the wiring loom and reg/rec, bottom cnils there is a simple test. first turn the ignition OFF and remove the keys, then disconnect the positive battery lead from the battery, get an indicator lamp and holder or similar and connect one wire to the postive battery lead and the second lead to the postive battery terminal. if the lamp lights then you have a leakage, disconnect the re/reg unit and if the light goes out then you have a faulty reg/rec. If the light stays on then its a process of elimination until the lamp goes out, then you have found the leak/fault.

You say your bike was standing for a long time .... where was it standing ?... in a garage or outside?

if it has been standing where it can get damp and has been there for a long time, some electrical connections made be corroded and that may be making the problem worse.
