My problem:

On saturday i went to pump up my tyres using a 12v pump connected to a fag lighter under my seat, went to start the bike first but the battery was flat as a fart. so put the battery on charge and left it overnight, yesterday i went out for a ride, all seemed ok.. did about 60 miles then stopped off for a coffee and then set off for a run down to squires, i went to go through a tunnel and remembered i'd turned my lights off on sat, so flicked them back on. About 2 miles later the bike cut out at some traffic lights, and when i went to thumb the starter there was nothing, very feint lights on the dash and not enough power to turn the bike over.

When the recovery truck arrived, we jumped the bike into life and put a meter across the battery, started off at 11.7 (ish) volts, and slowly crept up to 12.5 (ish) when revving the bike. my instant thought was that it's the Reg Rec that's gone?? not sure how accurate this is?? when charged the battery seems to hold it's charge ok, and yesterday started the bike 6 or so times before giving up, so i'm pretty sure the battery is ok, but just not getting charged.

does the reg rec sound like the source of the problem??

if so, am i right in thinking i can put pretty much any regulater on the bike, as long as it's got 5 wires (3x input from stator + 2x to battery) as there's no way i can afford £60 for a new one Sad ??

Many thanks...

If it was the Reg/Rec then I'd expect the voltage to spike when revving the bike. It should spike much higher than 12v. It sounds to me like your alternator is on the way out... However, I'd start with the cheap stuff first and replace the battery in case that is knackered. Charge it up and see if you get 14+ volts across the terminals. If you get less than that then its probably shagged.

Exactly the same symptoms on my Blade turned out to be failed insulation on the stator.

I'd already fitted a new battery and Fleabayed a replacement genuine reg/rec, but it was only once I replaced the stator that the charging went back to normal.

Mine could just about maintain the battery if I didn't use the lights, but long journeys at night were out of the question. Much better now.

Hi

Battery might not be OK now having run that flat. Overcharging a battery can cook them (but no idea what charger you used to know is that is likely).

Regulator / rectifier units often fail totally, and you will get no charge from them at all (or possibly if the regulator side fails you will get a silly high voltage).

We did have a similar problem with Charlottes GPZ500 years ago which was caused by a magnet breaking off from the flywheel and cutting one of the wires on the stator. I would assume you have 3 wires from the stator. With a multimeter check the resistance between each possible combination of a pair of those 3 wires. If one is quite different then I expect that to be your issue.

All the best

Keith

Maybe check the main 30amp fuse.

My bandit done something similar when the fuse went, i managed 80 miles on battery power alone then it just died going across a busy round about.

The AA came out and charged the battery back up then claimed it was the alternator at fault when all along it was a 20p fuse.

I had similar issues, (although mine originally involved heated grips) after many times of the battery being dead etc i eventually replaced the battery... haven't had a problem since (touch wood, every time I talk about my battery it dies)

They are common problems/symptoms of the SV Reg/Rec - barely enough power when the lights are off, turn them on and it can't sustain them.

It COULD be the alternator, but my Pound Coin is on the reg/rec

The 'curvy' SVs regulator was inadequte.

I replaced mine with a GSXR750 one (K5 IIRC) - couple of wires swapped about - job done - Thumbs Up

Fits under the rear cowling (just) and is much more robust than the carp SV one!!

edit:

This one should see you right! Thumbs Up (you just need to nick the plug off your old one and make sure all the wires match up correctly!)
