For the first time in 14 years of driving / riding I ran out of petrol today.

Embarassed

It wasn't till I fumbled with the fuel tap that I realised that it was ,and always had been since getting the bike, on reserve so was bone dry!

Thankfully pulled up near a petrol station, the fact that I had to run across 8 lanes of traffic was another thing!

Hands up, who's run of of fuel and looked a right muppet walking back with petrol can in hand?

The moral of the story being if you think you can get a few more miles from the tank, don't ride like a twat and be heavy handed on the throttle.

Its worse when you think you've run out of fuel, but it turns out to be the kill switch.

Not that I've done that at all... Embarassed

Have done it before, then felt real akward trying to discretely get rid of the petrol can, as i had no provision to carry it, the amount of people that walk past when your trying to hide something is funny.

I have not run out of petrol but when I bought my fireblade it was raining when I rode it home so I gave it a wipe down. Next day pushed it out of the garage and the poxy thing would not start. Phoned the garage to moan that they had sold me a dud . Went back out to push bike into the garage when I noticed that I had hit the cutout switch when I wiped it down the night before. Back on the phone to eat some humble pie.

Ok, well if were into embarassing fuel stories...

When I was riding my 125 a couple of years ago it died on me and I pulled up on a petrol station forecourt. Petrol guage read 1/4 tank so went for the electrics. AA man turned up and did the same for 1/2 hr before we discovered that the gauge was stuck and I'd ran out of fuel. Embarassed

When I picked my bigger bike up I dropped off the 125 with the guy. I filled the bike up on collection and headed out with him for the day to get used to the bike. Filled it up for the journey home (150 miles) and headed down the motorway.

Having a laugh on the bike I sporadically hammered it and cruised at a steady 80 lots. Hit the A3 heading towards Portsmouth the bike started burbling and chugging and my first thought was a break down and was about to call the guy and ask him for suggestions.

Over to the side of the road and nothing was getting the thing started. There was definatly fuel in the tank as it sloshed about a little . Then I tried switching the fuel switch to reserve and the bike roared back to life. Needless to say I pottled down to the petrol station feeling a little silly. Embarassed

I was tempted to lob mine on the curb but it actually fit in my Lidl tank bag. My old uniform and bag reak of petrol now.

Yep, done it - twice Embarassed .

I had replaced the fuel tap on my TZR250 but was as usual rushing to get it finished without soaking myself in petrol. I managed to cross the normal and reserve lines to the tap Embarassed Embarassed Embarassed .

When I first ran out it was litterly approaching a fuel station so I coasted in and filled up - never bothered to check the tap Evil or Very Mad .

Next time, it was a warm 33 degrees day. I had passed a station and conked out some mile and a bit down the road. Switched to reserve, sod all. Looked in tank, bollocks thought I, there should be petrol, it wasn't on reserve Confused .

Pushed it, on a slight incline for the full mile and a bit. Contemplated suicide a couple of times due to the heat and the fact i was utterly knackered!!!!! Luckily the TZR250 is pretty light compared to many bikes. Should have jogged the mile, got a wally can and job done but I didn't want to leave the bike on a small country road unattended hence the "push" of shame Laughing .

Got home, checked the fuel lines, realised my error, swore, threw things, kicked myself - vowed never to make such a stupid mistake again Rolling Eyes .

Did it on my 125 when I was learning. Easily done.

Quite hard to do on newer bikes, the Z has a fuel gauge with flashing warning when near empty and the 6 has a warning light that comes on when there's 3 litres left in the tank or so.

It's worse when your 17 and don't know your bike has a reserve switch and you take it to you're local mechanic because you think it has a fault...

I did something similar. I had only had my bike for a few days and forgot it needed petrol.

From Commerical street (My destination) I got lost and ended up going through black wall tunnel to lewisham, canary wharf and then back (Fair few extra miles)

Ran out of petrol and pushed bike about 1 mile to a petrol station.

Filled up, not working so I thought fuck I killed my bike.

Pushed it back home 3 miles (Hardest thing I have ever done, my calves cramped up so much)

Found out next day I hit kill switch aswell when I was pushing to the petrol station.

even worse is running out of petrol & not realising that lack of fuel is why your bike conked out...& then proceeding to half strip the bike down, taking the carb off, spark plug out etc.
25mins later i discovered i had forgotten i to go to petrol station that week. Embarassed
cheers,
GAZ
ps ; done it in the car as well, had just bought it, had a quick look at the fuel gauge & it was 1/4 full & i saw what i thought was a light, so was waiting on light to come on before refuelling.
needless to say, it wasnt a fuel warning light, it was a black screw.
was my 1st day in a new job as well. got there sweaty, dishevelled & stiking of petrol:oops:

My bike cut out at a busy set of lights once, held all the traffic up as I had filtered down to the front and when the lights changed, I couldn't move. I had to push the bike across the junction like a tit and onto the pavement at the otherside.

Only then did I realise I had caught the kill switch. I also did the same thing and waited for an hour and a half for breakdown and the dude looked at it and flicked the kill switch and it worked fine.

Aside from that, I've ran out of petrol doing about 80mph, just went bone dry and rolled to a stop. I've also just run out of petrol a few times but luckily right near petrol stations.

Fuel light came on, bike spluttered just before the petrol station so I filled up the tank feeling all happy that I made it. Went in to pay, got to the kiosk only to find my wallet was empty and I had no debit card on me either Embarassed Laughing

Did you call it an electronic breakdown on track Wink as they can charge you if they have to lift the bike off the track for running out of fuel (well some do) Thumbs Up

Guilty of running out of fuel on a 125, have not done it on any bigger bike (yet).

I knew my bike was dangerously low on fuel when I was riding home one night, but every station on my journey was shut owing to it being late at night. The next day I decided I would risk the 4.5 mile journey to the petrol station. After 4 miles the bike chugged to a halt. As I could hear some fuel in the tank, I figured if I leaned the bike to the left whilst starting it, it would draw the remaining fuel into the fuel lines and would get me the rest of the way.

200yards from the petrol station, sat at a T-junction, I twist the throttle slightly, ease the clutch out and start to make the right turn. Part way across the (busy) junction the bike dies again... Only I wasn't expecting it! As I was moving at 5-10mph and turning as the bike cut out... The stall caused the bike to jolt and me to lose my balance. Cue me wobbling erratically all over the road with my little legs going like the clappers trying to get over 220kgs of triumph upright. Thankfully I regained my balance and managed to pull over to the side of the road. I jumped off and pushed the bike 180yards to the petrol station feeling thoroughly embarrassed.

The real walk of shame is when you've just done some 'spirited' riding past a group of cars & then they pass you a few miles down the road as you're now pushing your bike. Laughing

That happened to me, a van i overtook went passed when i broke down & honked his horn as if to say 'You didn't get far, twat' Laughing Embarassed
