I am completely horrified and shocked by this - it's completely immoral and against all my beliefs and I don't know what to do about it - short of handing my notice in, but then I would be without a job!!!!

RECORD BUSINESS INSIDER: WEIR ADMITS TO 'IRREGULAR' DEALS IN IRAQ Jul 23 2004

ENGINEERING group Weir yesterday said they had uncovered evidence of irregular payments in relation to their work for the oil-for-food programme in Iraq.

Weir said an internal review has found that £4.2million was paid to a local agent in 2000 as part of work undertaken under the United Nations-run programme.

This was on top of normal commissions paid by the Glasgow-based group for their activities in Iraq, which included the supply of water pumps and pipelines.

Reports earlier this year named Weir among hundreds of firms alleged to have paid kickbacks to Saddam Hussein's regime.

According to the reports, the Saddam regime had insisted on a 10 per cent mark-up on all supplies under the oil-for-food programme since the middle of 2000.

Weir, who have previously denied any anomalies, said the final recipient of the £4.2million was unknown but they accepted 'the sums may have been returned to Iraq'.

Chairman Sir Robert Smith said: 'It is most regrettable that previous statements, while made in good faith, were incorrect. The problem dates back to 2000.'

Shares in Weir, who employ around 8000 people worldwide, fell more than three per cent following the announcement.

But the company said the new information would not alter their outlook in 2004, which includes a pick-up in orders in the final six months. Profits totalled £56.7million last year.

The oil-for-food programme was introduced by the United Nations to enable exports of Iraqi oil to take place provided the cash was used for food and medicine.

Weir, who have former Nato Secretary General Lord Robertson on their board, were granted 37 contracts as part of the programme through their overseas business, Wesco Dubai.

After an internal review discovered evidence of anomalies, Weir called in independent legal advisers Herbert Smith to carry out amore detailed probe.

This investigation, which is ongoing, confirmed that irregular payments were made in relation to 15 of the contracts.

Weir said yesterday: 'The group's internal review has revealed a number of areas within the group's procedures where improvements can be made.

'Management are taking the necessary actions to implement these improvements immediately.The group have also filed disclosures with the relevant authorities.'

The group's UK operations include sites at Manchester, Huddersfield and Bristol.

Well it is called business, they want to make money, If you feel that strongly about it then quit. If you stay there you are perhaps being a bit hypocritical by accepting their money happily but complaining about there dealings with dodgy dictators



Actualy I doubt their are many companies out there who don't exploit certain people, Ok they may not fund a brutal regime, but they let people sit in sweat shops for 1p a day or pay them buttons for hours of work growing crops.

At the end of the day you have to earn pennies to live the life you want. What your employer does isn't your responsibility. In an ideal world, we'd all work for companies who fit in with our own morals and ethics.... either that or we'd win the lottery

Unfortunately it's a feature of doing business in most areas of the world where there is oil.

It's probably only because it's Iraq that this one has come to light.

Money changes hands in brown envelopes every single day, importing and exporting essential equipment into most of these places

I used to say people were paranoid but lets face facts money talks and big corporations rule not governments i feel my vote is worthless in this day in age.

A good example of this was a current trial in which a 17 year old sent a joke e-mail to playboy incorporated u.s.a. stating

"I have hacked your website i currently have your mailing list and i want £90 or i'll release it" this was basicaly what it said well the feds came to his house in england he was arrested he got 2 and a half year for this can you belive that when people are stabbing and killing each other and are getting community sentences he got 2 and a half years.
